I just had a Don Tomas Candela and it was great I was just wondering if there were any others on the board who liked them and any suggestions for trying others. I have looked at the fuente candelas but don't want to buy until I am sure I like this kind of cigar

YIKES !!!

Don Tomas Candella ?!? I personally dislike Don 'Turdos', and Candellas are much to mild for my tastes .. but I'm sure there are those that do ...

... and anyting Fuente would have been a far better choice, on any of their cigars ... if you want consistancy and good flavors.

I had the Don Tomas candela before and didnt think that it was that bad. Actually, I dont think most DT cigars are that horrible. I rarely smoke candelas, but have had a couple of the Fuente ones before. Cant remember what I paid for them, but know that they were worth the money. I say give 'em a try if you get the chance.

Wow slim, what an objective and helpful post that was (managed to again blast what YOU don't like, good job). Will you ever get it into your head that different people like different cigars? Is it ok for people to like cigars you don't? Just wondering (since it seems to be your mission to, like a child, call cigars you don't care for names, even when others just said they like them). No, I'm NOT sticking up for this particular cigar, I don't care for it either, yet I have no desire to go on the offensive about it, grow up.

As to the original question, sorry but I can't recommend any for you. Candelas aren't to my tastes so I haven't really tried many (acutally two I think). Unlike what others may think though if you like something then enjoy it, no matter what the name is on the cigar. After all, it's your money, your tastes, and your enjoyment. Good luck!

I was gifted some La Gloria candelas and can recommend these to anyone that wants a more full-bodied smoke with the distinctive taste of a candela wrapper. This is fairly strong, very peppery cigar. Highly recommended for a change of pace.

lukin,

Taste is a personal thing, if you like a cigar go with it. Heck some people actually eat and enjoy things like blue cheese The Candela Don Thomas is a cigar I enjoy from time to time. If they return to Cbid try some La Platas, also Gispert and some Don Lino cigars while not candelas might be something you might enjoy.

In some ways, smoking cigars is like photography, some people are into the art of capturing a beautiful image, and others are just into owning the best equipment money can buy. They will speak endlessly of the features and superiority of their equipment and take only sundry snapshots.

what bassdude said - in the carefree days of my youth I was starting to get into more full bodied cigars like AF sungrown, etc. and then was given the DT candela and didn't know what to expect although I was told it was mild. I was pleasantly surprised by it. I think it's a quality stick for someone relatively new to cigars or who prefers milder sticks. That's the only candela I've had,but I imagine the AF candela isn't any worse than that one. For other good mild sticks I'd try a La Flor Dominicana, RyJ Reserva, Ashton classic or a Diamond Crown

thanks for the advice. As for Don Tomas, the few I have tried have been good. Not as good as premiums, but I can't afford to smoke those all the time 🙂 I like them in the morning. I also like the taste of a candela, it reminds me of the smell of grass (both the lawn kind and the other). Its mild and doesn't ask to much. I like it better than most of the milder cigars I've had anyway.

428cj --- it's too bad that you can't handle those with different opinions ... and I did say that they are much to mild for my tastes. Am I the only one here who says that they don't like a cigar someone brings up? I just said it the way I see it, and if you have a problem with that ... deal with it.

FWI --- the Don 'Turdos' joke has been running on this board since it first started 4 years ago ... and I believe it was Rookie139 who first said it to Heg at that time.

Anyway, I made my suggestion to try the Fuente Candella ... so lighten up, whiner ...

... and lukin --- if you like 'em ... smoke 'em.

Nobody's opinion on a cigars is going to change the way you feel about them anyway, even if someone makes fun of them ...

I tried the Don Tomas Candela because it was given to me by a friend on the ship. Smoked it while I was washin' my truck (yeah, picture me washin' one handed cuz I didn't want to get the 'gar wet).

Anywho... I kinda dug it, even though it was milder than I like. So I got me a box of them.

You may find this happen to you though, lukin... A cigar you like today, may become tomorrow's dog rocket! If you like, it buy it. If your tastes change, gift them to someone who likes them or ask for a trade.

Thats my 2 pennies.

I like candela, but not as much as other wrappers. I like Don Tomas Cameroon, but don't really find the DT candela very interesting. However, as gerber noted, some candelas have peppery taste profile & a few are fairly strong. I can't recall having either the AF or LG candelas, but suspect they're much more complex than the DT. I'm not slamming the DT; I just agree with others that it is a relatively mild smoke -- & some may like it as a change of pace.

Yes, as lukin noted some cigars have a somewhat "grassy" note. I doubt many BOTL would like to have an strong grassy taste, but IMHO like some other descriptions, "grassy" can be a broad range characteristic.

had a DT candela last week. Was VERY mild and burned nice but frankly nothing special. Not sure i would even spark another one up if I acquired it. I gave the other one I had (must have came in a sampler) to a friend. We were talking about the Candelas and I said "oh i have one..." smoked it and said "oh, HERE! the other one is all yours!" lol

One should always keep in mind that the tastes of Americans who participate on cigar related bulletin boards are not indicative of what the general cigar smoking public prefers.

Mild cigars outsell fuller bodied cigars. The original blend, very mild Macanudo remains the #1 selling cigar in the United States.

Prior to the embargo, the best selling hand rolled cigars in the United States were American Market Selection (candela) clear Havanas, rolled in Florida.

Candela fell out of favor for a couple of reasons. The wrappers tend to be as fragile as most cameroon wrappers and the taste of today's candela tends to be very grassy.

The Don Tomas and Astral candelas appear to me to be the same cigar. The Don Tomas "18-year-old wrapper" isn't just mild; it's bland. I've had both Fuente and La Gloria candelas, and believe that the La Gloria is significantly more full bodied. If you hunt a bit, you may find the Macanudo Jade, sometimes called the Jamaican. It's by far the most tasteless of the candela wrapped cigars. I do like Villazon's Hoyo de Monterrey candela. It's mild, but has that very distinguishable Honduran Hoyo taste profile. My preference in candelas is the Flor de Jalapa, an inexpensive Nicaraguan puro; Cuban corona size.

Slim, thanks for the personal attention, I appreciate it. As I feel no need to resort to childish name calling I'll let you run wild with it, you do a good job of it. Your advice to me is 'deal with it'?! Wow, good one!

As you so often love to tell people they're out of line on these forums I was only pointing out you added NOTHING constructive to the question at hand, again only giving your little views on what brands you hate. Lukin had already mentioned HE liked the brand, so is it really relevant what YOU hate? In your world maybe, fortunately most don't live there! I know this will sting, but I don't care at all what cigars YOU hate, if I like it (or anyone else for that matter) that's ALL that matters. Am I wrong?

But then again you're the 'leader' of the boards, so I'll end my posting on this subject now (feel free to correct the error in my ways). I stick by my comments that you should try growing up though (you look older, but you still need to resort to name calling?!). I do understand some would rather not grow up, and that's fine. Each to their own.

Thanks again though for trying to set me straight, sorry though it didn't work!

Sorry slim, I forgot to address one more thing you brought up. I ALSO mentioned I didn't care for the particular cigar mentioned (without name calling too, wow!), so what difference of opinion are you talking about that I have a problem with? I suggest you once again READ what's written. Again, the question wasn't about what you don't like, was it? Maybe I missed something. Ok, I'm officially done.
