Don't think that I have ever seen a thread on this before. My wife suggested that I use a glass cigar tube as a humidifier by drilling holes in the plastic cap and filling it with Climmax media. Has anyone tried this before? It would seem to be a great little travel humidifier. They only drawback that I can see is the fact that the tube is glass and may break... but then again they put cigars in them and have never broken one in a humidor before. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Shot in the dark but......

I'd try an aluminum tube. That way, no need to worry about breaking and you could drill holes in the tube itself, maximizing the use of the beads inside.

but i've never messed with the beads....yet

Billy,

Good point but I wonder if the beads would react with the aluminum?

Don't know....I wouldn't figure it would since PG doesn't bother the tubes when they are stored in a humi. Most people just use something plastic. Film roll container should do it for a travel sized humi.

Another thought, they also sell small plastic containers to hold coins. You could drill many smaller holes throughout the container so there'd be more air flow (or humidity flow I guess). I've heard this particular media needs more air contact to work well, so maybe having more holes would help. Just an idea.

Then again since you already have the glass tubes give those a shot. Can't beat the price if you already have them!

I have the beads, in a small tupperware bowl, in my coolers, and a couple of shotglasses full in my Desktop Humi. I have never had this stable a humidity level. Dead On 65%. In my traveldor, I put them in a bolivar#3 tube, with holes drilled through it. Works like a champ. Forget the glass, aluminum tubes work great, without the danger of broken glass tubes.

I tried it with glass first and ran into the problem you said.. the moisture just couldn't get out. So I did what Homebrew did, used an aluminum tube. Poked holes down the sides after i crushed in the sides so it looks like a star. Won't roll around that way. Otherwise I can't remember why I crushed in the sides. Ohh well damn memory's goin to hell... heheheh

Climmax media will not react with aluminum. Their Premier Units have aluminum cases.

1. Toothbrush holders

2. knife

3. hot glue gun

I made up some pretty darn nice humidifiers with just these 3 items. Cutting a large opening down the side of the toothbrush holder, and sealing with the hot glue. More hot glue to make a little stand for the toothbrush holder to sit with tipping. 1/4 pound of Climmax, and some distilled water.....Perfect!

my suggestion is suited more for coolers though.

very creative, smelly!

i've made humidifiers out of empty camel crema (specialty cigarettes) tins by poking holes in the lid with an awl.

my plastic ventures have been using very small size tupperware/gladware and sticking holes in the lid -- with a pipe ream held over a flame for a few seconds. i get about a dozen holes per heat-up. 🙂

not that this anything to do with anything -- i'm just always looking for new humidifier ideas. 😃

I take the empty containers from Crystal Light beverages, cut them down to about 1.5-2" high, fill with climax beads and distilled water. I drill as many 1/8 " holes in the container cap as I can and have had great success in even humidity. Sure beats spending $9.95 for a comercially available bottle. Also have used a CAO alum tube with holes drilled then filled with beads. Worked great as small humi.

I can see I am going to have to step up and get me some beads....it just sounds too darn simple!

Tried the aluminum cigar tube last night. Punched a bunch of small holes, filled with beads, a couple squirts of distilled water and whammo. Works like a dream. Great idea and it fits perfectly either in my desktop of the bottom of my cooler.
