I just purchased a Colibri Connoisseur lighter and I wanted to know if anyone can tell me how high the flame should be on the high setting. Mine is about 1/2" on high. Unless mine is set on high, it will not light. And if I try to turn it down after lighting it, the flame goes out. Is this normal or is this defective? Thanks in advance for your input.

Hey Mike,

Welcome to the boards.

You may need to purge your lighter. Take a pin, and depress the fill valve, until there is no sound of escaping gas. Then refill your lighter with colibri fluid, or other double or triple refined butane. This should correct the problem. If this doesn't, then the lighter is probably defective.

P.S. the surest way to screw up a good lighter, it to use it to light Dog Rockets. Life is too short to smoke cheap cigars.

Jessica, thanks for the input. It has been taken care of and a new one is on the way.

Dave, thank you too!

We have a 30 day return policy, but there are times that we might be able to bend the rules. After the 30 days, we try to contact Colibri directly.

I accidentally tossed my Colibri lighter out the window of my ex-girlfriends car at 65 mph. Turned around (it cost $70) picked it up off the pavement and it worked just fine. All it did was chip the fuax woodgrain finish. Nothing wrong with those lighters IMHO.

I got about 5 colibri's sitting around.. all different kinds of them... sometimes I can pick one up and it will work... other times they just sit around... purging is the option but every time I fill one it works for a bit then needs purged?? to work again... hell the triple refined can of Juice I purchased was 8 bucks alone... thats a good cigar for me... I went back to Bic... and now just purge my cigars LMAO!!!

Colibri will repair them for a few dollars. Check their website. Everyone I know that has had one has had a problem with it within the first year.

homebrew nailed it on the advice. one more thing to add, though: when you refuel, turn the lighter to the LOWEST "-" position first.

if you don't do this, pockets of air can get trapped in the bladder (sounds like what's happening with yours, hog) and cause it to malfunction.

i had trouble with my colibris and thought they were a POS, but my tobacconist schooled me, and i've not had a problem since.

recap:

1. use only 3x refined (or above) fuel

2. bleed the bladder before EVERY refueling

3. turn to lowest "-" position before refueling

doing these 3 things should have your colibri humming right along for years.
