What exactly is the normal acceptable herf protocol? I figure by now someone has compiled a decent list of expected activities at these events. What are the roles of the hosts/guests? If this already exists somewhere here, please direct me. If not, can some folks contribute to the answer here? Thanks.

LOL @ John...

Actually, don't you have to be a member of "Godfather's Family" to do a "safe" Herff? LOL

From what I understand a proper Herff involves a lot of food (BBQed or otherwise), a good amount of liquor or beer, and plenty of cigars. All of this can be provided by the host/hostess or as a Pot Luck, BYOB, BYOC combination. The main idea is to have fun, get to know some B/SOTL, smoke some new sticks, and PIG OUT!!!!!! LOLOL

JMHO

I think nealep hit it right on the head! But, I have been to many a herf with just good smokes, and couple of cocktails, and fine folk.

That would be the basic must haves for a good time...

I always thought a Herf was simply a gathering of BOTL/SOTL. Food and drink are optional....Protocol? {I guess you do need to smoke the cigars}.

Anytime I am having a smoke with a BOTL its a herf. Nothing else required.

Except for maybe a grenade launcher.

There is no real 'protocol'.

Most herfs I hit are BOTL gathered at a bar to enjoy a few brews, gars and conversation. And of course we always bring gars to hand out.

OK so herf protocol - bring gars to share.

Beat's right ... that said, one thing that one generally experiences at a "herf" (based on my experience) is exchanging some cigars ... it's not required, it's not protocol, it just happens ... SOMEone will wanna give someone else a smoke or two (or more) so, it might be a good idea to go prepared ...

Beat & kornazoo... I have to ask (and I'm sure I'm dating my self by not knowing), why a gernade launcher?

Personally, I like the M-203 set up.

My reference to a grenade launcher was a smart ass remark that had to do with another thread that lofty and I were engaged in over on the misc. board. Kinda of a inside joke deal.

Now im curious as to what a M203-set up is..

Ok... for those in the know,

an M-203 is an M-16 rifle with a 40mm Gernade Launcher slung underneath it.

Lofty,

I have tried to throw a couple of Herfs. I think the main part is the people. You meet others who share your love for cigars. What I always tried to do is also have free cigars for everyone. Since the event is a herf. Many cigar companies are willing to contribute to your herf. Food and location are 2 things that really dont matter. If you plan on gathering inside at a bar or restaurant, food is not an issue. If you plan on gathering outside, people will bring different kinds of food. You most likely will end up with too much food and not enough time in the day to talk about cigars with other BOTL.

One thing that is a must is to bring some very good cigars from your own stock that you do not mind giving away. You will be gifted some very nice cigars and will want to retaliate right there.
