I've read On the Road... In a word I found it "Earthy". Good but it was a highlight of a seedy kind of exsistence. I liked the Dharma Bums a lot better, and Mexico City Blues. I have 3 different CD sets of Readings. One set is all Kerouac, which is my favorite. The second one has mainly West Coast Poets and the third one has East Coast Poets. All Read by the origional authors. I also have a book on tape of Alan Ginsburg reading Kerouac's Dharma Bums. Along with a few other compilation books like the Beat Reader.
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,/dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix,/angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night--"Howl" by Allen Ginsberg.
