I recently gave a cigar to a gentleman who came into my place of business. He proceded to lick and moisten the smoke with such loving care that I felt the cigar owed him about 50 bucks. What's with that? Do they like the aroma of burning saliva? Or was he afraid that I'd change my mind and want it back?

seriously though, my dad does the same thing. That's why I buy him his own cigars. When I first got him into cigars, he'd take some drags off mine. After one of his saliva swabbings on the cigar, I decided I'd set him up with his own smokes 🙂

LOL! now that's funny. My brother-in-law does the same thing! I told him "keep it up, and you'll be buying it breakfast!" I think it was a thing to do years ago, when stores didn't care much about humidors and storing cigars properly. It certianly is a good deterant for "indian givers"...LOL!

Bud is right ... it's basically a throw back from the old days, when cigars were kept in copper containers. they didn't know much about relative humidity and the effect it had on cigars back then ...

I've heard from many old timers that it is also just a part of the ritual of smoking a fine cigar. Many claim they like the taste, and it helps to moisten the cigar so the wrapper doesn't crack or start to unravel.

Others say that it helps to keep the cigar burning even, and will reduce the chances of it tunneling up the side ...

Then ... ther are those who DO think it does help to make the cigar taste better. Try it ... and you be the judge!

Yeah! Try it! But do it in private so those around you won't think you're going through a life change!!! All kidding aside, my Dad(mid 70's) also does it and claims it makes for a better more even smoke.

LOL@Hegemonic! Last new years eve I offered an old timer (f***ing drunk and annoying as hell....) a stoogie. He also did this thing (any woman, I thought, would get off of the work he pulls of with that tounge...) and I thought it was kinda disgusting.
