This last Christmas my Mother surprised me with this gift.
She found my Dads US ARMY discharge papers. Then she sent a copy to a company that makes replicas of military medals and ribbons. Then they made up a framed set like this. I'm very proud to have this. Its a great memorial of my Dads service in the Korean War. He is in the late stages of Alzheimers now, but he was quite a guy in his younger years. He volunteered to enter the service after the war had begun. He went right into the infantry, with three of his buddies. My Dad and one friend returned, two died in combat.

At the top center are 2 bronze stars(hard to see), under those is a combat infantry badge, under that is a Republic of Korea Service Medal. From the bottom left to right are, United Nations Service Medal, US National Defence Medal, US Army Korean Medal, US Army Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal(Germany), Korean Defense Commemorative Medal. The 2 rank patches are Staff Sergeant. He also went to Japan for a while but not long enough to recieve an Occupation Medal for that.

Thanks for looking. And thanks to all of you guys that are serving or have served in any branch of the US military. We all owe very much to you brave men and women!

That is a great display, please be sure to treasure it. I lost my Dad one year ago on New Year's Day to asbestos lung disease. He served on the heavy cruiser USS Rochester from '50 to '53 during the Korean War. He was involved in all the major campaigns including the evacuation of Marines from Hung Nam and the Inchon Invasion. This "police action" under the auspices of the UN is truly the "Forgotten War". There is no true Hell like a North Korean winter.

That's awesome! My Dad gave me my Grandfather's WWII and Korean medals in a frame similar to that. He started off as a volunteer E-1 in WWII (Army Air Corps) and retired as a Lt.Col. (Air Force Reserve) with 33 years in. I was also given the flag that was drapped on his casket when he passed away 7 years ago this month. He was a great man and my mentor. I can remember going to sleep at night while as told me stories from his days in the service of our great country. I miss him alot, and even as I type this, am getting somewhat teary eyed thinking about him and how much he is missed. My wife never got to meet the man I loved so much and had the greatest impact on my life than any other human. I hope to also pass my medals down to my son (if I blessed to have one).

Sorry for rambling, that just brought back a lot of great memories.

My grandfather passed away August of 2003....He was with the 1st Mar Div. serving on Guadalcanal and mainland China...

I for one get saddened when I go to an estate auction or garage sale and see in a stack of things these memories leaving the grasps of family members who seem to not care what their parents/grandparents did in their lives... all the memories are washed away when someone else collects them up for the sake of having them...

seeing this thread and the Proud display you have there brings a smile to my face and I someday hope that all my memories will be carried on by family members as your dad's are here rather then end up in a box at an auction or garage sale....
