I lived in Olongapo for 3+ years. I was a Boiler Technician on the USS Sterret CG-31 from March of 88 until May of 91.

Joined in 87 and i'm still active. Started as an E-1 and now i'm an E-8.

Navy pilots are the best. Let an Air Force pilot try landing his plane on a moving ship...

I did a wespak, but our liberty ports were cut short, because Iraq & Iran started shootin at each other and at the oil tankers... So we spent alot of time doing tanker escort duty. Remember the USS Stark, that was part of our battle group.

I wish I had stayed in also... I was 24 at the time I went in.. I busted my a$$ studied and completed all the requirements, made E5 in 4 years.
But my grandfather had an small aircraft salvage and repair. He would buy damaged planes, we would rebuild them and sale them... He really needed my help.

Myash - too bad your tour was cut short - I was 19 years old when I docked in Subic and ventured into the jungle. Subic was fantastic...and I also rate Bangkok and Freemantle as my top 3 ports to visit...

MACS - All hail the Senior Chief of Snipes!! (LOL!) I salute you, sir! And by the way, if I had spent 3+ years in Olongapo, I'm certain it would have resulted in my demise...I loved the PI! Even when I travel throughout the US, I always scan the Yellow Pages for a Filipino restaurant - love that pancit bihon and chicken adobo!!!
