My group and I, standing in front of a prototype titanium armor plate for upgrade to the HUMVEEs in Iraq. The group is standing on a "raw" titanium slab that will be used for a similar purpose. My industry is booming right now due to armor orders....and it adds a new layer to worker satisfaction knowing that our production can help save lives.

Great Job. When I was on the ship, our HT's (Hull Technicians, or welders) outfitted our dual 50 cal mounts with steel plating all around them. They even made helmet racks and ammo can holders.

I could use a new watchband, can you spare about a 10 foot section of that slab? I'd like to retire early.

We don't actually own any of the titanium (it is sold the moment it is cast), we just process it. Our scrapyard has about $5M in trimmings, etc, but alas....it is all owed back to our customers who's beancounters know EXACTLY what is there.

I have considered smuggling dust out in my lunchbox.

a toolbox full of dust would pay for the kids' college, and buy you a few smokes as to boot......of course you could always end up in jail, I guess that's a downside......

Would you believe that Titanium Dust is practically worthless. In fact, we had to PAY to have an outfit come in and carry ours away. It is very flammable, and the dust doesn't re-melt well because of the oxidation caused by the heat of grinding/sawing.

However, if you would like some, please drive on over and we will load your truck.

It is a great party trick to toss a handful ino the campfire.

I thought of that but really didn't follow through with.

My guess is that ours is too course and inconsistent. To get it to in a finer state would be very difficult and dangerous. I'll bet that a chemical process is used to convert titanium to "firework grade" powder.
