Hog

One of my favs. An interesting note on the 30mm cannon,the recoil when firing is equal to the engines thrust. I heard a pilot explain why it wouldn't stop dead in the air while firing but I don't reall what he said. X

These are awesome planes. We live very close to the Willow Grove Air Base in PA. These fly over us all of the time. You can't miss that high pitch sound. Great picture.

I live in Tucson Arizona and these are now part of the culture here. It'll be a sad day when they retire this glorious machine. I heard they designed the gun and then said, “make this gun fly.”

Thats right Sleepy. The cockpit on these beasts coccoons the pilot in titanium armor (if I recall). I've watched a number of Tactical demos and its incredible how manueverable they are at low altitude, low speed. Aside from the 30mm canon, it can dleiver a tactical payload greater than a WWII B17 bomber.

i see these things doing practice drills at Ft Drum all the time. really cool to watch.

Love these things. At night when they'd come in, it just sound like a huge mesquito then something would blow up in the distance.

I am actually looking at a complete shell casing of the 30mm used in what could be the nastiest gun found on a plane. I keep it in my office as a conversation piece (it's is not packed of course) My dad played a big role leading the manufacturing team at Republic in the late 70's early 80's when they put this beast into production. I grew up with this plane so to speak and heard the stories of it's capabilities over many dinners. I have seen live demonstations of what it can do and it gave me chills to see it in use during desert storm and then more recently. This plane is a stud, it's basically a flying gun. It's slow, quiet and can be shot to **** and it will still make it home. What an ugly hog but very effective.

I love that airplane.

It could only be made better if Marine pilots were flying it.
