Unfortunately ... the poor chaps parachute probably didn't have time to open in time.

I've seen that pic from another angle. Huge crowd around at an airshow. Pretty sure he made it. The seats are "said" to be "zero-zero". Eject from zero altitude and zero airspeed. Of course you can always racthet down into the fire of the crashed plane ( that would not be a good thing, but at least he had a chance).

He got out clean from what I remember. It was T-bird. That's the first shot I've seen from that angle.

ejection seat will but a 250# man 250-300 ft in the air.. enough height to fully deploy parachute and the canopy has it's own initiators to blow the seals and eject itself prior to seat initiation.. 4/10ths of a second apart and the whole process takes about 2-4 seconds once the handle is pulled... lotta G force in that short timeframe... you don't even have time to **** yerself and if you did you'd probably be tasting it with the G-Force the seat puts on you LOL

I was going to ask you to confirm my information, but i see you already have. I thought the ejection seat could be deployed as long as the aircraft was moving. I have seen many Navy "zoomies" punch out while on the deck on TV. Gotta love the Wings Channel.

Ducati, the seat is live when the safety pins are pulled...Canopy also... the pilots actually Ride in a live Rocket while they are flying and doing their missions whatever that may be? to deactivate the seats is the Job of the ground crews after each mission... every member on the flt.line who works around these Aircraft are responsible for their own safety when it comes to this and any Maintenece on the Jets... with the F-16 their are only 3 pins and a rivet along with a sequence window a person is to check prior to getting in/out of the c*ckpits... most any fighters you'll see at an airshow as "static display" will have the canopy's closed... this is good reason for this...

the old F-4s had ungodly safety pins in awkward places to account for... count 10 your in was the rule of the F-4 days... add that factor with a -15 degree windchill and a hang over and you can read about accedents that happened.. it's called complacancy and it only takes a tenth of a second to remember if your lucky.. a lifetime of guilt...

The ejection seat is only good when you aren't doing MACH.

Brother was on the Presidential Medical Team and had recovered many ejected pilots. Notice I used the word recovered...not rescued.

Going MACH or greater he says shredds the body.

Saw the canopy of an F-15 get popped when the emergency cord was tangled on the onboard retracting ladder. They did not alow use of the onboard ladders after that. This was at Luke AFB AZ in 76. It flew pretty good, and just barly missed another bird on the line.....
