Get this, this guy at a bar was arguing with me that motorcycles can only go to a 45 degree to the road because they'll slide. Oh how I wish I had this picture then...

If you ever look at sport bike tires the tire tread goes about halfway up the sidewall, so yes, you can indeed maintain traction while driving on the side of the tire. Almost makes me miss my bike.
