I bought a high hat patio heater at the beginning of the season. Absolutly worthless trying to smoke around it, so I cut a couple feet out of the riser tube (maximum possible). It was still about 8" too tall to keep me warm, so I built a custom box out of 2x3 and 1/2" plywood, and covered it in brown trim coil. The 20 lb. propane tank slides in from the rear. This 55,000 BTU monster kept me nice and toasty in sub freezing temps this winter.2765330.jpg

Nice, but won't that melt your vinyl siding?

CE, he said he used it all winter. Looks like the siding is fine to me.

I have the same problem here in Cincinnati. My deck heater is too tall but only if you are sitting down, I was debating taking a few inches out of it but if you are standing next to it, your hair gets a bit crispy!

Great idea and execution.

I should take a picture of my siding where the wife thought she would try her hand at grilling while I was gone......fail

Eddie,

I'm a contractor so damage to the siding/window was my first concern. Checked both constantly, to make sure I was far enough away. That heater and I went through 100s of hours of smokes this past winter (and 4 20 lb. tanks). Next year I have to do some kind of wind break, probably on the back porch.

As long as you don't break wind in the direction of the flame. That could be disasterous. Oh....and....

Hey, pal...thanks for the global warming and the hole in the ozone!

Actually, I tried a big shpo heater when we moved to our house. Kept my head and torso warm down to about 40 degrees, but not the lower half of my body.

Far better to build a smoking lounge in the garage.

^Relax Pac, I planted a tree, so the whole deal is carbon nuetral. Even exceeds Cap & Trade, er I mean The American Power Act guidelines. Gore and Kerry told me so.

Surfish, Torpedo and I used it tonight as we watched the Flyers kick Boston's butt.

Pretty sweet setup, as an HVAC guy I have failed because I like your set up better than mine, lol. Is that a baseboard electric heater behind the chair?? Was that Plan A?

Again, pretty nice.

I have been living in Tampa for two years now. Haven't had to take the heater out yet. These have been the two coldest winters in Tampa for a long time.

Move away from the cold!!

I always hated smoking under those things, always a tendency to make my cigars crack, but sometimes you got to do what you got to do..
