FGM. you just gotta know your way around a fillet knife. no more gutting just take the best parts off and throw the rest back in for the crabs.

these fish are considered a delicacy.........to trouble with filleting them at all...........or simply gut, scale, and grill whole.

Decent-sized fish. I've seen one or two kept as pets, but not many (not a really colorful fish). Have never had the pleasure of consuming one.

A fellow mason asked me to save a few sheepshead for him. I did but asked ...what do you want with those boney fish ? He pickled them ! I hate anything pickled but pickles !

They were delicious !!

Blackened sheepshead soup is a favorite of mine.

They also have good worms.

^the really big ones (like many other fish) are likely to have worms.

I have never come across any on small or medium sized fish............although the worms are harmless and completely edible.

I was more so referring to the one's in their intestine... I work on fish parasites.

Since sheepshead have a varied diet and a long intestine they are a great host.

^hey FGM...........I've been wanting to try this but haven't had a chance yet.

Here is what I want to do....

1)Take a mess of bluegills or other smaller fish (perch, etc).

2) Scale them, remove the viscera, and remove the gills.

3) Marinate them a short while in some citrus/chili pepper concoction.

4) Toss them on the grill (on foil for indirect cooking).

I've "grilled" larger fish in this manner, but never bluegills.

This might be the best way to deal with bones & wasted meat. You might be able to just "lift" the whole spine/rib out of the fish and pick through what is left.

We used to fry them like that when I was young. But even after you've pulled the spine, you've still got to be VERY careful and chew it well. Those bones are small and can hide!
