My father was a rifleman in the American Legion, so at his funeral they did a special ceramony where they laid his rifle on a black cloth and folded it up as a symbol of a fallen solder, it was very emotional. I was told that is only done for those from the rifle team. Afterwards one of mom and dads very good friends, also on the honor guard, presented mom with the folded flag.

I have a very similar piece of Russ's handy work. It hangs over the hallway entrance in the house so we pass under it regularly. It contains my father in law's flag.
