what is 17, a roulette number?
fpaternostro

Yes Rick, 17 is in the center of the roulette wheel. I ended up hitting it a few times with $25 on it which is a nice hit, but the problem was that it was too early in the night. By the time I left, I was down about 1 large. Oh well, had a great time though and the cigars were the hit of the table.

the center of a roulete wheel is the big knob that sticks up with four do hickeys sticking out.

$25.00 @ 35 to one is $875.00 + your original $25.00.

you are a BIG gambler to lay that kind of bet down straight up on a number. you're suppossed to walk away after that.

when i played i would by four stacks and bet as follows.

1 chip straight up on 10,11,12,13,14,15,21,33.
the numbers are equally spaced around the wheel. there are lots of other numbers like that, but the numbers are right in front of you on the table so it is easy to get a bet down.

with a win, i would go to 5 chips.

with a second win i would go to 10 chips because at that point you are ahead and betting house money.

with another win i would go to 25 chips. again you are betting house money and even if you don't hit, you are money ahead. if the 25 hit, i cash in and go have a nice drink and a cigar.

any loss and you start over. but walk if you hit a 25 chip bet.

if you do the math, you will see how the chips pan out
as you make your bets.

with black jack i use money progression of 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, chips and back to 2 chips with a 10 win or any loss.

when you place a 5 chip bet, you already have your original 2 chip bet back so the 5 is house money. a 7 chip bet and you have your original bet plus 1 1/2 time your original bet in your stack so the 7 bet is all house money. the 10 chip pet puts you 7 chips ahead with the 10 chip house money bet.

always take the proposition bets, and always take insurance if you have a black jack and the dealer shows an ace. it is the only guaranteed win in the house.

when the dealer card is an Ace he will:
bust 11.547%
make:
17 13.002%
18 13.082%
19 13.059%
20 13.091%
21 5.350%
make blackjack 30.868% of the time...

NEVER take Insurance... especially if you have a Blackjack of your own. Insurance would not be offered in the game if it was not to the casino's advantage.

There is one rule in a Casino you must abide by if you wish to give yourself any chance of overcoming the house odds....

If it lights up or makes a noise DO NOT put your money in it, on it, or around it!

prop bets are for fools... example:

Let's take the game Let It Ride...
Playing perfect strategy in Let It Ride cuts the house edge down to 2.88%... not as good as Blackjack but not as boring either... if you place $1 on the "lighted" button to get odds on making 2 pair or better the house odds on that bet are 24.89%... if it makes a noise or lights up stay AWAY from it...

i never played "let it ride."

i see some interesting differencec in our technique.
you are saying dealer ace against your BJ is about
2+ to 1 he doesn't have BJ. interesting.

dealer shows a 5. you have ace 6 or 7 or 8. do you double?

RICK...

First off it is never my intention to call anyone a name so maybe I should rephrase my statement...

prop bets are foolish bets not those who play them 🙂

These extra intisements are always huge house odds with the promiss that someone will hit the "BIG ONE" and maybe it will be me today!

OK on to your question about the A6, A7, A8, against dealer 5... basic strategy says to double down on A6 and A7 and stand on A8...

Playing video poker as you said you and Toby do when in Vegas is actually a good game... Video Poker played using perfect strategy is actually the only game in the casino that you are at even odds with the house. Problem with most people is that they do not take the time to learn perfect strategy on any of the games that they play in a casino and the house knows that so the very few that have takin the time do not concern them very much.
=============================

Let it Ride...

type in let it ride in your search engine... the game is VERY simple and learning perfect strategy for the game takes about 15 minutes.

It is the only table game in the casino that you can risk $10 on a hand and have a legitament chance at winning $1500...

The casino we frequent about an hour from here took the game out a few months back, even though it was full all the time, and put in another blackjack table that sat empty just like half their other blackjack tables do except for busy weekends... after a lot of complaining from the patrons they put the game back in the casino but lowered the limit from a max $50 per hand to $15 per hand.... when have you ever seen a casino drop a limit on a game that is supposed to be to their advantage? Now that's not to say that the casino was losing at this game but it does tell you that they knew they were not making the kind of cash they wanted to make on those 7 seats.
===========================

The bottom line is a casino is a great night out... have fun at what you enjoy playing while you are there and the rest be damned!

A little advice though... take the time to learn basic stategy on any of the games that you might play and you will give yourself a better chance of winning or at least cut your losses down to a minimum. this will not only cut your losses but also allow to to stay and play longer on those precious free evenings.
=========================

here is an outstanding site for those of us who like to make the casino a night on the town once in a while...

we are cool.

toby and i have been vegasing since 63. first time we went there for the weekend we had about $30.00.

now we rent a furnished 1 bedroom apartment for a little under $300 a week on tropicana st about 1 mile from the strip.

food is food so cost for eating is samo samo. 4 hours of nickel slots will cost us about $3.00 an hour or less in unreturned nickels.

the only time i ever left vegas having had a bad time was many, many years ago when i brought $300.00 gambling money and lost it. i made a mistake, i tried to win.

i've never made that mistake again.

you are right on. if you are going to play any game except slots that make noise and are played by people that have no idea what gaming is all about and will just feed the machine until they are broke, you should learn how to play the game properly, learn how to manage your money, (you neglected to mention that), and know when the odds are in your favor, and set a limit on how much to win on each "encounter" not how much to lose. when we win a little, we buy something for ourselves with the winnings, a fancy pr of earings, an expensive rain coat, and anything else for your wife.

we still have a pair of wine glasses that we won about 30 years ago and paid $50.00 each for them.
