We have Air National Gaurd 70 miles east of us and have F-15s fly over/land here pretty frequently. Heard these guys then drove by airport and saw them stagged for takeoff. White planes with blue stripes and NASA markings on tailfins? NASA have F15s for training pilots or something?2913674.jpg

NASA has a bunch of special aircraft for aeronautical testing.

The aircraft shown in the pic are F-18s, not F-15s. -15s have straight up vertical tail stabilizers while F-18s are V'd like those shown.

NASA has a variety of special aircraft that are involved in testing. Most are located at Edwards AFB, China Lake or Paxtuxtent River, MD. I would guess that those shown are actually the EA-18 variants of the F-18. They are slated to take the mission of the EA-6B Prowlers and are for electronic warfare.

Just a guess...

Those look like F16's to me. The trainer version. Not F18's.

What do I know....

They do kind of look at F-16s gringo...though the fuselage is a little fat for that, and it is hard to see the second vertical stabilizer on the tail. Get a better camera ZRX!

I'm 100% sure they are Hornets. I'm the Production Control Officer for Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 11 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (San Diego, CA). I directly support 81 of these aircraft (plus those that I have deployed).

Sorry for the double post...

F-16's don't come in 2 seater models, either. F-18/EA-18s do, tho.

RE: 10

There are plenty of two seat F16 trainers. The only aircraft in AF inventory with no two-seaters is the A-10. Your first flight in the A-10 you're all alone (in the aircraft anyway).

FWIW

^ Like dude said there are plenty of 2 seat F16's.

I was a Marine Corps Air Traffic Controller for 20 years (well 4 infantry and 16 ATC, recently retired), I was mocking myself for not looking hard enough I also should know in an instant, even with crappy photogaphy what an F18 looks like.

I didn't really look at the back bird and had about six Turkey and Cokes down, which didn't help. lol

Semper Fi Marine, see you around.

The F-16's I've seen at Edwards were all single seaters, as well as the ones we had at Kadena in Okinawa. From what I know of the Air Force two seater F-16s, they are all allocated to the Training Squadrons and don't do any traveling.

The EA-18 and F/A-18s at Edwards were all two seaters whenever I've been there (more than a couple of times, ha ha!). You can see the V'd tail on the rear jet.

The Thunderbirds have a 2-seat F-16 so they can give media rides.

My question was who's they were and why Drazz answered nicely, and thanks for easing my OCD bro.
