I found the last statement by MACS(SW) fasinating (it dosen't take much to facinate me) so I had t check it out and sure enough according to the Petplace....

Calico cats, with their orange, black and white coloration, are almost always female. So are black and orange tortoiseshells. Why?

The answer has to do with genetics. Every cat has 38 pairs of chromosomes; half of the pairs are from the mother, the other half is from the father. Within every chromosome there are thousands of different genes.

Every female cat receives one X chromosome from her mother and one X chromosome from her father, while a male receives one X chromosome from his mother and one Y chromosome from his father. Within the X chromosome is a gene for coat color.

In calicos and tortoiseshells, one X has the black gene; the other X has the orange gene. White coat color is associated with a completely separate gene.

At conception, the kitten is a one-celled organism, which divides until there are millions of cells that make up the final kitten. Each time a cell divides, it passes on its genetic material.

i went looking for a calico kitten and ended up with perk, toby's shih-tzu.

question to those who might know.

i have been in contact with three calico cats that were not mine. they all played the same way after marking me. they would pretend bite. grab a hand with out breaking the flesh and then bite gently on my hand. sort of a rough house kind of play.

is it the calico or is it the trust they have with me. i have had siamese and a stray now and then, but only the calicos played that way.

Rick: My cat is not a calico, but is a female (gray and white - short hair). She plays the same way. She'll lie on her back and soft-bite me...she then gets up, runs, and wants me to chase her. Its pretty funny.

Rick,

When they would gently bite your hand, would they also straddle your forearm with all four legs? If they were doing that, I'm not so sure they were playing.........

I think it's a show of affection with mine. She does it when she gets lots of petting, chin rubbing, etc.

My Lexei does that also. She has since she was a kitten. Only to myself though. Never to my husband or son. Kinda strange.
