What's the expression?

Shutting the barn door after the horse has left?

I got a speading ticket this morning.. So deciding better late then never, I'm going to get a radar detector.

Looked at some and now I'm confused. What features do I need and is there any brand I should stay away from?

My neighbor was raving about the detector that they bought at Radio Shack, said they drove cross country and back and were often between 85 & 100 mph, and it alerted them to radar every time!

Do not know brand name, but it was the best that radio shack offered!

i have a bell. or is it bel? i don't remember. anyway, it rocks. it has saved my butt a few times. a lot of folks believe that you don't need a laser detector. that's garbage. i would definitely get one that detects laser. mine has picked up laser before the cop got me a few times, and that feature has saved my butt. mine is pretty cool. it probably cost about $150, and it has saved me at least that much money in avoided tickets.

I own one made by Cobra. Works very nicely.

As far as the laser thing goes...

If your radar detector goes off indicating laser, that mean the cop's already got you and your speed. Pray you're not that much over, ease away from the gas and hope.

You know... the best way to avoid a ticket is to... obey the speed limit. 😉

"If your radar detector goes off indicating laser, that mean the cop's already got you and your speed."

Not true. The laser beam, like radar, expands with distance. The difference is the rate at which it expands -- the angle of the beam. It is quite possible to pick up the signal before the officer can detect your speed. I have, in fact, picked up the laser signal a couple of times where I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that the officer had no idea what my speed was. You don't have to believe it. It's still true. Laser detectors can and do work.

Also, you can pick up the signal before you start to speed. Sometimes the officer is right in front of you and you don't see him. If you pick up on the laser signal, you don't have to see him. I've been persuaded once or twice not to pass someone up because I picked up the signal before I knew there was cop ahead.
