I was watching the rash of hurricane documentaries this evening on History, discovery, etc.

After the Galveston hurricane on 1800 (I think), all of the local men were required to participate in cleanup duty in order to receive food rations. They were also given whiskey to deaden their nerves so they could gather the dead.

Could you imagine implementing a policy like that in THESE days??? Imagine the outrage. Imagine the lawsuits.

Whiskey rations? Where do I sign up?

All kidding aside. Most of those folks never knew what hit them. Thank God for Doppler, TV, and the Weather Channel.
