I would say that the majority of men on this board are married. Some even your wife is on the board as well.

Sarah and I met in North Carolina. We had long since left and were in Tampa. When I proposed to her, I packed all her stuff up in the car in the middle of the night, woke her up early the next morning and started driving. She had no clue where we were going. I took up to North Carolina where we met in the mountains and proposed to her.

How'd you do it?

4 months after my son was born... we figured it was the right thing to do. I was 19 and she was 22. We were married by a judge with 2 of our closest friends as witnesses. Nobody gave us a chance.

That was June 16th, 1989. We're still married. And happily too, most of the time!

I don't really recall exactly how I asked though... We're having lunch together today, so i'll ask her if she remembers.

How?: Very nervously.

Where?: Sinatra Park, Hoboken, NJ - directly across from the World Trade Center. It was the last time I saw the buildings.

Result?: Today is our 4th year wedding anniversary. We got married 09/15/2001. We left for our honeymoon from Newark Airport, seeing the smoke smoldering from ground zero.

I was typical - at a very nice restaurant over a dinner of rare filets.

I've been married twice, and both times it seemed to happen the same way. While dating we each felt one another out (not that way!) by dropping hints here and there to see if the other party was interested, you know, in the possibility getting hitched, having kids etc. Once it became apparent both parties were interested, and the hints and jokes had been bantered around, it was really anti-climactic to propose very formally, since the agreement had already been made tacitly. On both occasions the proposal was made by me in bed in a cozy cuddly setting, and the response was a look and a nod that said "you know I do." For me the old "popping the question" as if it were some sudden surprise made little sense; the question and answer had already occured long before in a subtle, less verbal way.

Gonna get yourself in trouble tailgater!

Well, just had lunch with the missus and she doesn't remember either, so i'm not in trouble for forgetting how it happened.

Not to sound cynical or anything, but things like this don't really matter much if it doesn't work out... the important thing to remember is that marriage is based on love, respect and compromise and you have to work at it.

Well, we went on vacation to Cambria, which is just down the coast from San Simeon.

I was going to propose to her at sunset, up on this beautiful cliff called Ragged point. Unfortunately there was a CHP officer in front of us on the freeway, so I knew we were going to make it up there for sunset.

So, I decided to pull over and we would walk the beach and pick up stones/jade/sea shells. That's one of our favorite things to do while vacationing there. After about 20 minutes I called her over so she could look at all the jade and shells I had found. Hidden at the bottom of my hand was her ring. So as she pulled the rocks out of my hand to look at them, she finally got the bottom and found her ring.

After she stopped screaming with joy, I went to one knee and asked her to marry me.

She never knew it was coming. Needless to say we were so jazzed, that we drove home that night to show our parents the ring.

I had actually stopped by her folks house before we left and asked her Dad's permission for her hand, so both of her parents already knew.

Anyway, that's how I proposed.
