Very true el,the most we or any parent can do is to guide them.Seems Rick is either ignorant of that fact,or just plain Clueless.

Any diligent parent does all he/she can to raise the kids right, but the crazy thing about humanity is, that they somehow grow up to have minds of their own and sometimes, take odd directions that are beyond parental control ... witness my oldest son; he was raised as well as his mother and I could possibly manage ... we monitored his progress diligently and corrected him as that was required ... and even through his college years, he did little to alarm us, there was no way of knowing what changes were to take place as he stepped out into the wide, wide world ...

Now, however, whenever I look in the mirror, I see the reflection of a failure as a parent and it makes me wonder what went wrong ... it's a humiliation to admit this and I gotta agree with you about being ashamed, but you know what? ... the damn kid got married, moved to Boston and became a liberal Democrat ...

Liberals: They support a woman who drowns her 5 innocent kids. Then they cast "shame" on a family with normal issues. I drank and got into minor trouble when I was in my late teens. Should my parents be ashamed? Perhaps the Bush family should just claim that they didn't understand the definition of the sobriety laws. It worked for the last administration.

his political life doesn't mean anything to me, but i'm sorry you did not get the reward of watching him blossom into an adult you could like.

if i am lucky, so be it. my kids 37, 35 and their wives and toby and i are a peaceful and contented family who look forward to our birthdays and our christmas get togethers.

my youngest is a partner in our business and when i see him (when i go into the office) i am proud of him. the oldest fought some tough fights with his guitar store and finally was put out of business by a chain that had buying power. he took what was given him and has bounced back and started a new business.

lucky? maybe. i don't care. it worked and works.

Rick, don't misunderstand me ... I HAVE watched him blossom into an adult I like and one I like a lot! ... I was doing my lame best to make a joke out of his politics, which I strongly disagree with, but which I actually tolerate quite well ... he's an extremely bright guy who after college worked for 12 years as a sports reporter for one of the Bay Area papers ... the boy did his dad pretty proud in the work he did there, too, winning three national journalism awards for his work ... the others have distinguished themselves too, each in his own way ... my soon-to-be 33 yo, for example, was in combat search and rescue for the navy and I could go on at a too-great length bragging on his accomplishments ... the letter of commendation we received from the department of the navy is the sort of thing that parents dreams are made of ... MrsS and myself are, I feel, as lucky as you describe yourselves being ... 4 sons who, on their b-days this year turn 36, 34, 33 and 25 ... all good citizens and all very responsible ... I've said countless times that everyone should be as fortunate as we are to have kids who turn out as ours have and it sounds as if you and Toby are just that ... my sincere, heartfelt congratulations to you ... it's to be lamented that every parent cannot say the same.

that's true and I can't sit here and honestly tell you that it doesn't hurt me ... I AM proud of the kid, but can't help but wish to high-heaven he had a little more sense ... when/if the subject of politics comes up, MrsS is extremely quick to make every attempt to divert conversation to some (ANY) other topic ... she is all too aware of how volatile each of us can be and how deep-seated feelings run in each ... she works very hard at being sure everyone gets along well and I'm sure she deserves all the credit for the fact that we DO still like each other ...

I do feel for parents who have to go through this type of torment from their kids. Doesn't matter what your politics are if there is too much money and not enough accountability.

I'm wondering if they'll get their own television sitcom offer from MTV like the Ozzy family did.... and instead of girls jumping on trampolines at the end of each show - they could just show clips of Chelsea eating corn on cob through the slats on a picket fence ...
