Camping friends gave me one of their MREs over Labor Day weekend. I decided that if its good enough for the troops its good enough for me and prepared it for lunch yesterday. Now that I know how the heater really works - and how hot it gets I'll do it right next time.

The entree was beef ravioli. A little dry but good enough with Tabasco sauce from the condiment bag.

Potato stix and grape drink complemented the meal nicely.

I was surprised at how much food was in there. I had to save some potato stix and the chocolate brownie till this afternoon.

If you eat them on a regular basis, you'll see why the five slices of turd paper that is also enclosed is more than enough.

LOL 00.. some of these are very good.. and then there are some that I wouldn't feed my dog.... it was always great to Trade with fellow co-workers though...

and them heaters are great as well, I can recall many times the old style MRE's with no heaters! and one would have to make do the best they could.. for me I always heated it with the Jet's Exaust prior to it taxing out for a mission...

Yeah... enough calories for a whole day in one meal too. Don't eat more than one very often... you'll get fat quick, unless your hauling 60 pounds 10 miles a day.

I noticed that if you ate the whole MRE you'd get a sugar overload. Even saving the brownie till today and not drinking the kool-aid I still got a sugar rush. By 6 o'clock my butt was dragging.

If you plan on eating those when you're camping, remember one thing; drink copious amounts of water with those things!

I always thought they were balanced. Eat the "butt plug cookie (also known as the dead Duke disk, sorry Mr. Wayne) and you were not pooping this month. Have a dehydrated strawberries, poop is on it's way!

I of course, only ate them when nessesary. Mostly I prepositioned assets (put a box of real food, snacks and smokes) in the truck before it was rigged for heavy drop.

Rugs, the modern day MREs have real snacks. No more of those oatmeal butt plugs. They have actual candy bars and the dehydrated fruits are replaced with the same types of fruit with juices as you'd find in cans.

I would only recommend you stay away from anything that says, "omelet" and do not fall for the jambalaya like I did. I grabbed the meal thinking, "Gee, that sounds pretty damned good! I love jambalaya!" Only to realize after I opened it that the smell of two year old shrimp does not sit well. No amounts of Tobasco sauce in the world could make that thing taste good!

Rug, shoot me your snailer and I'll mail you one to try. J.REDLEG at G Mail dot com

John, I was the BOC driver for a while, as a pfc. We were tasked with drawing the mres and handing them out in the field. There were none available so we drew about 600 lurps (not the right spelling but I forgot it). I had more MREs in the conex so I handed out MREs and kept the 600 lurp rations for myself. Now that was good eating! The cornflake bars were the best part. Chili con carne was the best entrée! I ate them for lunch for two years at the job site after I ETS'd. LOL

didn't they used to be packed with chewing gum and a rubber, in case the "natives" were friendly.

I thought you were suposed to chew your gum into a rubber if the natives were friendly. I really didn't pay attention in basic....

MACS,

I'm already fat, so the MRE isn't going to make that much difference.

I can see the point about needing to drink plenty of water to keep your innards working right.

My friends had some of the gumbo MREs. Sounds like I made the right choice with ravioli.
