Steve,

I love this place but I hate the Eagles with the white hot heat of the sun. You wouldn't respect me if I didn't take a shot. My team is the Giants. "What's that? OK honey, I'll be right down."

Steve, I have to jump. Apparently the Chargers just scored again. I think it's 150 to 24.

Bye

Torn hamstring...takes a man to go out and kick a game winning field goal with a torn hamstring. They're hard enough to walk with, let alone kick a ball.

He's frail enough to tear a hammy after supposedly conditioning himself like a pro athlete?

Did he pull it because of contact? Or simply because he was unprepared?

Or did he tear it while reaching for his purse?

Boo Hoo.

Joe

That is so unlike you to post something like that! He still gutted it out and kicked the game winner!

You are getting a little "Jacked" up....LOL

I don't know, Charlie.

Sure, he gutted it out.

But what caused him to pull his hammy to begin with?

I think too many kickers accept the fact that they're not real athletes. They are specialists who need not condition themselves to do the job they're paid to do.

If I'm wrong, then I take back what I've said.

Did he injur the hammy in an unusual contact situation?

His job is to do ONE thing. Kick the ball.

If he didn't prepare himself well enough, and he got hurt doing that ONE thing, then he is to blame.

I honestly don't know what caused his injury.

But let's not raise him onto a pedestal because of a 23 yard FG.

Cripes, I could kick one 23 yards.

And I wouldn't even spill my beer...

David Akers AKA... Kirk Gibson!

Bah. Hamstrings are easy to pull regardless of how conditioned you are. Look at Olympic sprinters - probably some of the best conditioned athletes in the world. It's very common for them to pull up mid-race with a pulled or torn hamstring. Hell, it happened to Michael Johnson in the world championships that resulted in him missing the Olympics - actually, it happened to him and his 'rival' from Canada in the same exact heat (they were both Gold medal hopefuls). The fact that David Akers is a kicker doesn't mean he's not a "real" athlete and doesn't properly condition himself. To say a professional kicker doesn't condition or stretch his legs properly would seem quite illogical to me, as it's directly related to their specialty.

Also, from what I understand, overdeveloped (stronger) hamstrings have a tendency to tear easier than lesser-developed (weaker) ones.

Steve,

That's QUITE a stretch (no pun) to try and compare a field goal kicker to an olympic sprinter.

Wasn't it one of the Gramatica brothers that injured his leg a couple of years ago during a celebration. Come on. Kickers are not athletes, they are highly paid couch potatos. Proof is any highlight of a kicker trying to chase down a blocked kick or trying to tackle a kick returner on a kick off. It is comical.

I'm with Gater on this one.

I'm not comparing them, I'm simply saying that even the most highly-trained athletes can tear or pull something while in the peak of their conditioning.

I believe the kicker you speak of twisted his ankle while jumping? If so, this happens almost nightly in the NBA, causing players to go on the DL.

Considering none of us (I think) have been a professional kicker in the NFL, it's not easy to justify coming down on somebody for his first injury in how many years?
