mazatla, puerto vallarta, or cancun are all BIG tourist types.

try cabo- it is not AS crowded. beaches are aplenty. cigars all over the place(but keep to actual cigar shops" to be safe)- and it has gone through a nice transformation since the busy '80's.

that would be my suggestion.

the others are nice, if you want a "spring break" type experience.

Cabo has GREAT fishing trips too.

Mazatlan is very nice. Even during Spring Break. I was there in March of 2004

Go further south to Oaxaca and escape to a quieter Mexico. You can check the Mexican Tourism Board website for information regarding possible destinations.

How fancy or not? You might look into Manzanillo. Las Hadas (where the movie 10 was filmed)is somewhat upscale. There is an all inclusive hotel called Karmina Palace - nice, relaxing, cigar friendly - Food is nothing to write home about. Another all inclusive, Club Maeva, relaxing, cigar friendly, food is better (but certainly not gourmet) but the rooms are outdated. Have fun.

The larger cities that cater to the tourists are not all that bad. I've been to Mazatlan, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Acapulco. There's a reason they are nice cities. It's because they have lots of tourists. Off the beaten path might not be so good. Roads, hotels, beaches, shopping, sightseeing. You never know what you'll get. You don't want to go where nobody goes. What's there? No one knows because nobody goes there.

Cabo San Lucas ROCKS! Go to the Cab Wabo club! It's owned by Sammy Hagar! They have thier own label of Tequila now! Fishings great! Scuba is fantastic! there's a seamount in the mouth of the Sea of Cortez, that seems to be a magnet for whalesharks! They are supposed to be AWSOME to dive around. Great shopping, as of 1998 the prices were still relatively cheap, and you can go see the beach at "Lands End" the bitter end of the Baja Pennensula, with a very famous rock formation, and a beach that goes up from the waters of the Sea of Cortez, and drops right back down into the Pacific Ocean.

Riviera Maya, then take a cab to the Blue Parrot in Playa del Carmen, Grab a lounge on the beach and just try to stay old.

Mav,

You can fly to Thailand for $500 USD roundtrip. Your $100 per night hotel in Mexico runs about $20 USD in Thailand. Meals will run you about $10 per day for steak and lobster. The people and the beaches will steal your heart. Oh....and the beaches of Koh Samui Island are topless (if you're interested in Russian boobs that is).

Yes but Cabo also has the booze cruise. All you can drink while you cruise around the harbor and out to Lands End for three hours for like $20, also cigar friendly everywhere. Brrrrrrrrp!
