I know some huys in So MO that will fight for these. Never tried them and wondered if this is just a MO oddity.

People fighting over raw squirrel brains? Just as I suspected, SSE: squirreline spongiform encephalopahty, or, mad squirrel disease.

I finally figured it out!!!

Southern MO hick #1 "You eat squirrel brain?"

Southern MO hick #2 "yup"

#1 "no you don't"

#2 "yes I do"

#1 "Show me"

And so it began....

I've had cow brains...very tasty bbq'd fresh!! So I'd try squirrel brains if I got the chance. (or squiggle as we call them at home cause my dog recognizes the word squirrel and freaks out trying to break through the sliding glass door!)

Unfortunately, that is not an oddity that is found only in the State of Misouri. I had an aunt in Mississippi who did the same thing whenever I was a kid. That is, in fact, one of my more vivid childhood memories. It ranks right up there with laying out on the porch throwing up uncontrolably for about an hour due to secretly raiding the same aunt's stash of homemade muskedime wine. Pretty traumatic for a 10 year old.

Yep, they were about as "Country Hick" as it gets.

Its also a Kentucky thing. A guy there was being treated for Jacob-Cruetzfield (or something like that) disease because of his consumption of squirrel brains.

Yup, mad squirrel disease. Jacob-Cruetzfield is a form of prion, similar to mad cow disease. Apparently proteins that occur naturally in the brain get mutated or mis-folded somehow. If you ingest them, from tainted cow brains, squirrel brains, or human brains (common in New Guinae) these mis-folded proteins can cause your normal brain proteins to mis-fold and your brain essentially turns into swiss cheese. Some really strange variations occur where folks laugh themselves to death, laughing uncontrollably into a frenzy till death. The other one, the one that scares me, is acute familial insomnia. The victims lose the ability to sleep, eventually going completely mad till death.

Neat stuff. Happy Halloween.
