WASHINGTON POST ––8/16/02

The International Association of Fire Fighters is
considering boycotting the annual national memorial service for fallen firefighters to
protest President Bush's decision to withhold money that would help fire departments.

Bush said Friday he had a strong commitment to firefighters, but needed to cut federal
spending."What they ought to be upset about is the fact that Congress tried to tie my
hands," Bush said. "They said, 'You've got to spend $5 billion or none of the $5 billion.'
And I chose not to spend the $5 billion because, one, we didn't need to and, two, it is
important for this country to be fiscally disciplined as our economy begins to recover."

The president withheld $5.1 billion, including $100 million for improvements to
communications systems for firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel.
Rescue workers' efforts on Sept. 11 at the World Trade Center were hindered because the
agencies' radios could not communicate with each other.

Bush also blocked $90 million for long-term health monitoring of emergency workers at
Ground Zero and $150 million for equipment and training grants to fire departments.

A sponsor of legislation creating the grant program, Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.,
asked Bush Friday to reconsider his decision.

"Our nation's firefighters play a critical role in ensuring homeland security, and your
decision to block the release of these funds – while applications are still pending – is, in
my view, misguided," Dodd wrote to Bush.

At its convention in Las Vegas earlier this week, the union voted to ask its president to
formally protest Bush's decision. Among the options: Boycotting the annual service in
memory of fallen firefighters, scheduled for Oct. 6 in Washington. Bush has been invited to
speak at the event.

"I did get the message loud and clear," said Harold Schaitberger, the union's general
president. "My members are angry about this veto and they do not want to let the president
use their image for his political benefit any longer. This veto is a slap in the face to every
firefighter across this country."

Other options include writing a letter to the White House, lobbying Congress to override
Bush's decision, or holding a protest in Washington.

Delegates to the convention also voted to return Bush's videotaped message to the
meeting.

"Don't lionize our fallen brothers in one breath, and then stab us in the back by eliminating
funding for our members to fight terrorism and stay safe," Schaitberger said. "President
Bush, you are either with us or against us. You can't have it both ways."

Jimbo - sounds to me like you have blind devotion to GWB, do you pray to him and make sacrifices so he'll pronounce words correctly? No one is infallible, and he has more faults than just his poor grammar and utter incompetence...

Jimbo - I wasn't trying to make it a personal attack, I'm just amazed that you're unable to acknowledge any of GWB's faults, it's as if he can do no wrong. Blind patriotism and fanaticism are worthless, and on the same token so are blind hatred and thoughtless disagreement.

Try making a logical argument or retort instead of taking jabs at Rick's quirks, or liberals in general. chris

You really can't place the blame on the World's most Powerful Man when politics tie his hands behind his back ... "all or nothing" has never gotten anyone or any entity anywhere at anytime in history ... what this means is that Congress/Senate personnal were closed-minded when it came to negotiations .... the above is like saying you have to 'cut off your nose to save your face' ....

Well gee Chris,I don't know how much more plainly I could say it."I'm quite sure there is more to the story considerng the source.I'll just thank my President for not signing a blank check for 5 billion bones. These Unoin reps sound like a bunch of cry babies to me." I mean what part of Blank check don't you understand? Also where in this statement did I take a shot at Ricks so called quirks or liberals in general? Try to stay whith me here Chris. First of all you don't know me or what I agree or disagree whith Pesident Bushs policies.Sounded like an attack of my beliefs to me, even though you have know idea what those belief are.Hmmmmmmm you might try practicing a little of what you preach, no? For the record, not that it matters to me what you think. I don't/didn't agree with bushs pre Semptember 11th 2001 stance on granting amnesty to millions of "Illegal Immigrants".I do however strongly support his decision on not signing the Kyoto agreement as it was never ratified by congress only signed by a wanna be president Gore who IMO had absolutely no bussiness signing said agreement, except to make himself look presidential(what a farce that is).I also agree with anything that has to do with distancing ourselves from these oneworld government wackos in the UN including the UN international court.Although I myself would never have agreed to any stipulations from them in reguard to prosectuting American citizens. So there you have it Chris,I do not always agree with my President but I will always support him. BTW I beleive Jimmys statement above pretty much mirrors my original statement as well.

BTW this topic will be discussed on the Factor with Bill Oreily tonight at about 7-8 PM. I urge you all to watch it, even you liberals as this will be as close as an objective discussion as you will get on the subject from the media.IMO

"Don't they rep the firefighters" Rick does that make them heros? No it makes them beaurocrats. You know what I have against these so called civil servants, wether it be firefighters policemen, school teachers, postal workers the idiots at the DMV and their unions? These people took these jobs, nobody forced them to.Then they come out whining and crying about this or that and go on strike or protest or whatever and often times put the very public for wich they are supposed to work for at risk or try to use "the children" to make their case. All the while most will be able to retire from these careers with a decent pension at reasonably young age(a lot more than most of us citizens will get)and move into other careers as well. While I support most of these people.I have a healthy contempt for any of their unions.

Hold the phone Jim!! I was being honest when I said that it wasn't a personal attack, it just seemed from the majority of your posts in the political forum that you were blindly behind GWB. Now I think it has more to do with your differences and history with Rick, especially since you two are so different on politics. Your responses to his posts generally seem to question the source and make cracks against him more than you "discuss" the issue. And don't say you don't make cracks or innuendos, in the replies to me you tried to belittle me as well. I think that's mostly why I responded the way I did, I don't take that sh*t and it seemed like you we're dodging the issue. I agree with you completely about Gore, he's a self serving weasel who we're stuck with for a while because you know he'll try and run again. As far as GWB I definitely think he's done some good, but when he does things I disagree with I'll stand against him just as much as I stand for him when I agree with him.

You're right I don't know you from adam, but as far as what I do know we seem pretty similar as far as cigars, coffee, sushi and booze. But definitely different when it comes to politics, I guess that's what makes this BB so interesting. chris

"do you pray to him and make sacrifices so he'll pronounce words correctly?" Hmmmmmm no sarcasm or attempt to belittle me there, and that was before my Chrissie post to you so get off the high horse my friend, it's a lot easier to just pick yourself up off the ground.LOL...You guys crack me up!!! Chris Ricky's a big boy, he can take care of himself.Again where in my first post was I trying to dodge the issue.I'm simply waiting for more information before I make a decision on the issue. You might ask Rick or CJ to try it sometime.

Looks like CW picked the wrong post to jump on Jimbo. For the record, Jim you are right on regarding the unions.
