I know this is going to sound very callous, but it has to be said...

I am SO sick of hearing about the 'rebuilding' of New Orleans. Why the f*** are we even contemplating rebuilding this place?? It sits about 30 F'ing feet BELOW sea level. I don't think it is even FEASIBLE to build ****s and levies that will protect the place from another class 4 or 5 hurricane. So why are we wasting our time and money?

Turn the God forsaken city into a friggin' landfill, and when it is filled up... rebuild ON TOP of the old one, ABOVE sea level.

Am I wrong, or am I making sense?

i just read somewhere (could be here) that some economics prof at an ivy league school said it would be cheaper and better for the country/economy to give all the people $200,000 to start over.

if it was on these boards, i apologize for my idiocy.

burgess_b,

I heard something similar on NPR a few weeks ago. Reestablishing New Orleans as a shipping port is essential for inland businesses and farmers as far away as Minnesota and the Dakotas. Having places for the port workers to live is a requirement for an international port.

I agree with MACS(SW) and the notion that it would be cheaper to pay people to go away and start over elsewhere, or if they stay in New Orleans, that we taxpayers have NO further responsibility for their welfare.

whew-hew! score one for the guy who reads the paper! the article said what camper said, and that NO is dying anyway...and the $200,000 would seriously decrease the poverty issue (which america got blasted on worldwide thanks to katrina)...2 birds, 1 stone...and a cheaper stone at that.

Where did this thread go wrong?

I am quite serious about this. That ****hole needs to be filled in and a new city can be built on top of it.

To rebuild it as it is and watch it be destroyed, yet again... is pure folly.

what was wrong with the $200,000 ivy league answer. the city basically ceases to exist that way. poverty is reduced. the economy goes up. everyone wins...not serious enough for ya???

The diversion above was from "The Big Lebowski", which, if you haven't seen it, you should.

That's not enough. It's not only below sea level, it continues to sink about a centimeter more each year.

I have a refridgerator magnet from New Orleans. If it goes up in value by not rebuilding, I'm all for it, LOL!
