Petty won his 200th career victory in 1984 during the then Pepsi firecracker 400 with President Roanld Reagan present.

The lake in the middle of the infield is called Lake LLoyd. Here is an excerpt from DIS history.

Bill France hired a civil engineer, Charles Moneypenny, to bring his superspeedway vision to life. To create the footings for the 31-degree banking in the turns, Moneypenny had construction crews excavate millions of tons of soil from the track's infield. The result was a lake, covering 44 acres, springing from the low water table area. France, in honor of Sax Lloyd, the first man to give him a job when he moved to Florida in 1934, named the waterway Lake Lloyd. The body of water, which lost about 15 acres to this off-season's infield renovation, is still one of the raceway's most unique features.

Every year they host a fishing tournament during the 500.

Man, now you got me thinking back. This is the days before the Winston Tower-er Nextel Tower, resrtictor plate racing, $100.00 tickets, three year waiting lists, big 18 wheel haulers, with motor homes and private jets to shuttle the drivers.

Still, fun to see and hear. I must say it is pretty cool when they all come to town because you can rub elbows with any them.

Had a beer with Dale Jarret in the Pink Pony one year, Met Greg Sachs in the bathroom of Rio Bravo, ate dinner at the Captains Table Restaurant next to Rusty Wallace, had dinner with my wife at the St. Reigis Hotel on Valentines Day and met David Hobbs and Darryl Waltrip. Thats just a few of the things that happened to me living here.

Oh yeah, met Richard Childress at night club my brother and I ran the food concession at and sat and had a Jack and coke with him.

The best had to be sneaking down pit road and standing next to Bill Elliot and shaking his hand and wishing him luck during a 500 race.
