I have just recieved from the State of New Jersey, a letter that want's me to "cough up" $20.00 and change for a box of cigars that I purchased on-line from Connecticuit Valley Tabaconist. I was wondering if Cigarbid submits information to the government on the sales that have been made to us?

That sucks! But I don't think so DR,as far as I know both CB and CI are in Bethlehem, PA

We submit only sales tax to our state. No customer information of any kind is ever submitted to any state.

Man ... if CI/CB did this, I'd be in deep 'doo-doo'!!!

Interesting! I buy a lot of stuff online. I have never had to pay taxes of any kind. Ditto for catalog mail order. Can it be legal for NJ to single out cigars? Dogrocket, talk to a tax attorney. Set some legal precedent man!

You sure that letter's legitimate? A lot of sophisticated scams out there, and a lot of suckers not willing to question a State/Government agency for $20.

The truth is, the Government is not sure "how" to apply taxes to purchases made on the Internet. There are many reasons that apply to this, with a major reason being:

A customer can be placing an order on a plane flying overseas, while his billing information is in California, and the order is being shipped to Canada. How would one tax this transaction? Believe it or not, this transaction can be taxed by every state that the data "travels" through. Luckily, this is not the case.

It is also "mandatory" that online shoppers report every purchase they make on the internet. However, this is very rarely enforced, as one's total amount of purchases made online are extremely tough to track efficiently.

i would like to fulfil my tax responsibility. to whom do i report my purchases in the internet?
