I am relatively new to the cigar scene, but I would like to eventually become an avid hobbyist. Can anyone give me some ideas on how to get started? I would eventually like to have a room in my house set aside as a walk-in humidor, but that's way down the road.

First buy some cigars and start smoking them? Dont inhale.

Buy some cigars ... remember which ones you like ... smoke those

Sounds simple, but given the number of cigars on the market and the variations in size, wrapper, filler, etc., it really isn't as simple as it sounds. Oddly enough, some of my very favorite cigars are certain sizes of certain brands and types ... different sizes, even in the same brand and type are different enough that I don't care for those ...

One thing you'll notice on the CI site (cigarsinternational.com) is links on the bottom of each page referring you to other cigars that you might like ... so if, for example, you're on the page describing the CAO Brazilias, you'll see links at the bottom of the page suggesting that you might also like CAO L'Anniversaire Maduros or Camaroons or possibly Cuban Parejos ... click on the Maduros and you'll see links at the bottom for a couple of other CAOs and some El Mejors ... I've found these to be quite helpful and some good info that's led me to cigars I might never have otherwise tried ..

Also, if you follow all the threads here, you'll find a lot of discussion of certain cigars that seem to have the attention of different guys in the group ... you'll want to try the ones that a lot of guys seem to like and of course, over time you'll find which of the guys has taste similar to your own ... most of 'em are pretty good at suggesting stuff you might like and that's another path to follow ...

Good advise from SteveS. Also, the 5-pack lots are a good way to sample different cigars. Good bargins to be had here, but do some research on prices before bidding.

OK, TarHeel ... here's the deal .. for quite some time now, I've told new guys it was tradition here for them to send all (ALL, not just me) the established guys on the board a cigar ... I tell them it's up to them what to send, but that they should bear in mind that we will form opinions about them, based on how well we like what they send ... you can send mine last after all the other guys are taken care of.

plus, I see that I've developed a bit of a reputation on the flavored cigar thing ... I must've said at least once too many times that I can't even stand downwind from someone smoking one ... it's hell to get old and become so repetitious that you get teased about telling your stories too often .... next thing you know, I'll be falling asleep at the keyboard and the guys will be getting on me about snoring in here ...

a TarHeel huh? ... damn, I was just starting to like you, too ... is your TarHeelness due only to living in NC or is it indicative of your alma mater or both? ... see, I've been upset with those guys since Dean Smith first started coaching there and they knocked my school out of the NCAA tournament in a year when we were very heavily favored ... we got even not too long ago though, so perhaps it's time I let bygones be bygones ... just be sure to send a good cigar and all will be forgiven ...

Ahoy shipmate. In more than 30 years of smoking gars(in the Nav too), I've never had enough sticks to fill a walk in. I've only managed to keep 2 or 3 dors filled. It appears that I will be able to put my foot further in the "door" as I am moving out to San Diego in December, where apparently E-Chick lives. I am hoping that she will help me find the right places to move my collecting hopes to new lengths. Go Navy!
