any special agent is required to retire at 57, ATC are required to retire at 53 and the list goes on.

medicare=health benefits paid for by the taxpayers last time i checked.

how many local officals retire in their 40s or 50s and take a job the next town over as fire chief, police chief etc? or move to any other private, local, state or federal job and draw 1-2 pensions plus new salaries? not sustainable, sorry.

but yes, i agree on china. we reward companies who ship jobs overseas.

Anybody see the irony of the government empolyees posting frequency throughout this thread and others?

A small business owner screwing around on CBid on and off during work hours for a period of time leads to the businesses demise.

Public employee doing the same gets a collectively bargained raise at the end of the year.

I do most my posting from the road too. Which reminds me. 8 how far are you from Maddison? It looks like that may become part of my routine. It would be cool to smoke one sometime.

I 100% agree there is lots of waste in the government, but it is the nature of it (has to do with legislated fairness mostly, but if you don't get it then there is no point in explaining). I would love to see it reduced. What I don't agree with is the blanket statements about all government workers. It's just ignorant. Plain and purely ignorant.

50 is too young, no matter how few take advantage of it.
So is 57.
Hell, 65 is too young if this country and her SS is going to stay afloat. But you don't want to hear that.
You'd be happier to simply call us ignorant.

And that's a shame.

Once again I am wasting my time.

I don't know anyone that can actually retire on 1k a month.

Too hard to explain the intracacies of the system. Believe what you want to believe.

Hell, I just heard that the AVERAGE ATC salary is 161k per year. Yea right, believe that too. BTW, my fellow controllers are pissing me off with all this nonsense of sleeping lately.

And no I am not on the job posting.

As far as contempt for the tax payers? Who receives the services? The taxpayer. I also pay my own salary with my taxes? And?????? I like my job because I like the job. It isn't the salary or future pension. I enjoy serving the public and I do my job, with that in mind.

Like usual, you and many others sound bitter. If you are so unhappy, move to a place where you can save money, retire earlier, or whatever. Get a government job, get a state job. Start your own company and retire when you want.

Just slinging mud at an entire workforce is ignorant.

gringo, no one is slinging mud at the individuals. my uncle is an atc, and he is retiring this year at 53. Maybe he just told me he HAD to retire, i dont know, but either way, 53 or 56 is a mute point to argue. its unbelievably early. Enjoy it but like greece, it wont and cannot last forever. if we refuse to make adjustments to the system (drastic and painful adjustments), there will be more dire consequences later. i read a great post about TSA, all the other people that have access to airplanes is staggering. it really seems like a front to provide the illusion of security.

It stikes a nerve with me because of the sudden attack on the "American Dream" of retiring at a reasonable age. Not everyone can or should have the ability to do so. Simple, life aint fair.

Both sets of grandparents retired.

Fathers side: Grandpa worked in shipyards (Portland and Seattle areas) for 30+ years since he was barely out of college. He retired around 60 with a pension and lived within his means. Grandma was a teacher for about the same. Then she went into administration. Retired a little before grandpa. Not a big pension, but lived within their means and had saved and planned properly.

Mothers side: Grandpa sold insurance at a private company since he was 19. Retired partially st age 59, then worked part time until 61 then ully retired. Grandma retired early on a pension from Crescent Foods a private company, took a reduced pension.

They are my example. The thing is most people cannot afford to retire at age 56, it isn't an all expenses paid pension. You have to plan and save accordingly.

I don't know when I am going to retire, but it sure as hell ain't gonna be in my late 60's.

The other thing is that it is a very TINY part of the federal system that actuall retire early.

All grandparents lived or are still living well into their 80's.

I believe there has to be adjustments, but I am not going to talk about them right now. (ATC climate).

im with tailgater here. retiring in your fifties is a dream of yesteryear. this is because we have chosen to send money to every country in the world except our own, endorse welfare breeding, and fight wars in every dirt patch we can find, we do not have the money to fund these early retirement ages.

thats great your grandparents lived within their means, but how many young people do you think are going to do that? not that im a whole lot better but im better than most my age i know. i only owe on my house, my TV i just bought about a grand on my CCs. I need a new riding mower but im going to wait till i pay off my tv. (three years no % is tough to pass up)

the bottom line isnot matter how you want to spin it is that we as a country and individuals have been living on credit for many years. we have attempted to spend our way out of bankruptcy and of course that has failed. you can say anything you want but the country will not be able to continue to fund these kinds of benefits. its reality, it sucks, sorry.

another thought is the GM employees had the same mentality and look where it got them.
