the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.

Socialism has only ever been partially implemented in Europe and it is not working too well. It has been under dismantlement for quite some time. It turns out it requires a lot of money for care and feeding.

Socialism Light in the USA also hasn't worked out too well because as it turns out, it requires a lot of money for care and feeding.

Socialist programs ? So which one of these illustrious ''programs'' is a success? They are nothing more than ways to transfer wealth from those that make money to those that take the money.
Individuals are entitled to equal rights afforded to them by the constitution, not equal wealth at the expense of others. This mentality has created a class of people that have no desire or reason to ever contribute to society.
Why is it that our states that have such great social programs are broke? For example NY where I happen to call home (for now) is/was 14 billion dollars in debt when last I cared? If these programs worked so well then wouldn't NY be a shining example of success and not the place where people are fleeing to find better economic circumstances?

So, what is the real problem?

1. Inability to pay, but continuing to spend more on social programs; or
2. That social programs are inherently destructive?
