Is this even a surprise?????

Nearly three-quarters of faculty members at U.S. colleges and universities describe themselves as liberals, and at elite schools, the proportion is 87 percent, a survey has found.

What’s more, half say they are Democrats and 51 percent indicate they seldom or never attend church, according to the survey, published in the March issue of the online political journal Forum.

“You would expect the majority of English literature and sociology professors to be liberals, but our survey found that 66 percent of those in physics and 64 percent of those in chemistry are liberals,” said S. Robert Lichter, a communications professor at George Mason University and an author of the study.

In English literature, 88 percent are liberals and 3 percent are conservative, the survey found.

“And in sociology, 59 percent said they are Democrats and 0 percent said they are Republicans,” said Mr. Lichter, who also heads the Center for Media and Public Affairs.

In addition, more than two-thirds of faculty members surveyed say they either strongly (44 percent) or somewhat agree (23 percent) that a “homosexual lifestyle” is acceptable. About 84 percent say they support abortion rights.

The survey, based on data from the 1999 North American Academic Study Survey, questioned 1,643 teachers at 183 four-year higher-education institutions nationwide.

It also found that 15 percent of college faculty members overall consider themselves conservative and 11 percent say they are Republicans. Fewer than a third (31 percent) describe themselves as regular churchgoers.

The findings were compiled by Mr. Lichter, in collaboration with Stanley Rothman and Neil Nevitte. Mr. Rothman, the study’s director, is a retired political science professor at Smith College. Mr. Nevitte is a political science professor at the University of Toronto.

Said Mr. Lichter: “This is the richest lure of information on faculty ideology in 20 years. And this is the first study that statistically proves bias [against conservatives] in the hiring and promotion of faculty members.”

Mr. Rothman agreed. He said the survey “clearly showed” that faculty members who are “conservative, religious and female are less likely to get good jobs” on college campuses and be promoted than other women.

“Republicans get worse jobs than Democrats,” Mr. Lichter said.

The ideological shift to the left among college faculty has become much more pronounced in the past 20 years. In a 1984 survey by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 39 percent of faculty said they were liberals.

Peter Sprigg, senior director of policy studies for the Family Research Council, said the study proves that “American academia is overwhelmingly dominated by liberal secularists.”

He said it’s time they engage in real “diversity” and hire faculty members who reflect the values and “conservatism of Americans at large.”

Who the hell cares if their English professor is a liberal or a conservative, as long as you are taught to read, discuss and write?

Would it really matter if your accounting and business economics professors are flaming liberals as long as they teach you how to really analyze numbers.

Does it matter if your psych professor is a communist as long as you learn about how people think.

Would you really care if your materials engineering professor worship Satan, as long a s you learn the calculations and how to apply them.

Would it matter if your philosophy or logic professor is on the complete opposite place on the political spectrum than you are if you learn about different ways of thinking about things or how to spot a fallacious argument.

Everyone with a child should care if their teacher/professors are ardent idealogues that can't tell the difference between fact and idealogical fantasy. Or worse, they are consious of the fact and purposly misinform. Nice of you to mix "gay" in when it is not the specific issue at hand. Probably couldn't help yourself. Perhaps you should proclaim that I am making racial enuendo.
I have been in college and know that even in 100 level classes the text books and professors are so liberal that they really don't know that the opinion they are teaching is not fact. when you economics professor shouts, "Reagan was an evil ****" it matters. It matters because most of the Academicians only ppurpose is to exist in these pockets of reality that can't oppose their hardened views and where they can flunk, brow beat, pressure, and oppress dissenting opinion. Which is the very thing they, all to often, claim to be in support of. I have had only one liberal professor that was not an idealogical bully and he was honestly there to teach students to look at all perspectives and choose their own path. He is still a great teacher, but a virtual white buffalo in the heard.

I have to wager that you are a progressive, so it makes sense for you to be angered by this fact. Why would it matter? Why would anything matter? there is a reason foxes don't guard the henhouse. However, if you are not, than you are a bigger example of the problem. It matters very much.

I regret using the word "gay". It was not germane to your C&P. Seems like your academic experience hasn't been to good for you. If your still in school, why not go to an other school instead? I have been a student at five different universities and colleges. Rarely, did I experience any of what you wrote about. When I have, but disagree or think the professor is slanted, I speak up and out and challenge what they teach that i believe be wrong or inaccurate. If anything, it made me better equipped for the real world.

Where was the "information" in the original post taken from? Others have been accused of plagiarism on this forum with more attribution given for the content used than in this case.

The fact that those who were interviewed were specifically asked if a homosexual lifestyle is acceptable shows that the survey was biased and skewed to prove a predetermined "point".

Teachers and professors have a bully pulpit, and though I will not venture to say they all abuse the position, I will offer an example. Last year my third grade daughter comes home and asked me if Obama was the best president we ever had. Rather than voice my immediate disagreement I asked my daughter why she was asking. She told me her teacher said so. My first inclination was she took something out of context, but when I pressed a bit the teacher had asked the class if the class had watched the SOTU and then told the class how good Obama was and how he was trying so hard to clean up the problems Bush caused. This is a third grade class! I then discussed with my daughter that many people like Obama and just as many do not. Though my political views are well defined, even I do not force them upon my own children.
