Mean, on another thread you mentioned liking beeswax over tung oil. I am doing another box and got to wondering...do you wax over the final coat or lightly buff with steel wool and then wax? Then, how do you maintain the finish? You other woodworkers can chime in too.

If I'm not mistaken Meanie uses an old sock and a firm grip to finish his wood....at least thats what I heard.Ed???

I have found it depends on the type of wood being finished. I use a lot of white oak, and nothing looks quite as nice as linseed oil and several coats of Johnson's furniture paste wax.
Its a tougher finish to maintain, but worth it.

Hog knows what he's talking about. Bud is a good source of info also. Currently working on some picture frams and using the tung oil and beeswax method. 2-3 coats tung oil then 3 coats beeswax. Nice hard, shiny coat is developed that doesn't need maintenance.
If this is for a humidor, You may want to add a new coat a wax once a year.

After some surfing, I realized what I have is actually a tung oil based varnish. I used it anyway, buffed with 000 steel wool in between coats. Did about 6, came out really nice. I redid the humidor I posted pics of before. Layering stain coats was an experiment. Nice finish. But you could not see the walnut very well. See the pic post humidor redux. I decided not to wax. Wax has to be taken off at some point. Lemon oil does a nice job for maintenance. After all, a humidor just sits there. No wear and tear.
