It's that time of year again - the prickly pears are big and almost ripe and ready for me to risk life and limb making prickly pear jelly. Okay, maybe not life and limb, but the spines really are about 3" long.

I do this every year to benefit OpFTH. Send me 20 cigars for a jar of jelly - this stuff is hard to find, even here in New Mexico because it's so hard to harvest fruit and even harder to make the jelly - and if you can find it, it is just ridiculously expensive. And I've gotten lots of you addicted to this stuff already....hehehehe. Those of you who are addicted, tell me how many jars you want and 20 or so cigars per, and I'll set them aside for you.

Sorry I rarely have time to be here anymore, I'm running my own business and it seems to take every waking moment and then some. I am still sending packages to the troops every month on behalf of OpFTH, I just haven't been collecting donations due to time constraints.

I want to run the Prickly Pear fundraiser, though, so keep a look out here - I will update as soon as I have jars available. -B

The prickly pears are picked. (Try saying that a bunch of times in a row...hehehehe).

The jelly is in process, which takes a good while, but jelly should be ready by late next week. Send cigars and I'll get the jelly out as soon as it's ready. Be sure to give me your return address and tell me how many jars you contributed cigars for.

PM me for address, or ask around. -B

The first batch is done! It takes 2 batches per dozen jars - some things can be doubled, like cookie recipes, but jelly cannot be doubled, so I'm planning on making 8 batches.

Naturally, I've taste-tested the first batch and this is a banner year for prickly pears! BoilerEMT got the first jars - so let's see what she says about this year's jelly!

PM me if you need my address to send troop cigars. -B

Yes, those are ready to go. They start out green, and when they're dark purple like this, they're ready. I recommend BBQ tongs for picking them. They will eventually work their way through thick leather gloves, and will never come out, so the gloves have to be thrown away. Fun stuff! -B
