In 1960, Delta Air Lines achieved a speed record that still stands to this day. They took delivery of a Convair 880 that left San Diego & arrived in Miami 3 hours & 30 minutes later.

It was designed by Howard Hughes. The 990 had a longer range than the 880 did. Delta basically used it for short-haul routes. I would venture to guess that the cargo bins of the aircraft were fitted with collapsible fuel cells for it's record breaking delivery run, as Delta only used the DC-8 for cross country routes. The 880 was killed off by the fuel shortage in the early 70's. They were gas hogs. It was replaced by the 727. Before the Concorde, the 880 was the fastest plane in the sky. It used the same engines as the Mach 2 B-58 Hustler. It was one aircraft I really would have loved to fly on, but they're all parked now. Elvis Presely once owned a Delta 880. He named it the Lisa Marie.
