The U.S. Army is directing troops to remove a Bible inscription that a vendor etched into the serial numbers of weapon scopes, Fox News has learned.

Soldiers at Fort Wainwright in Alaska told Fox News they received a directive to turn in their scopes so the Bible references could be removed.

The scopes were made by Trijicom and referenced New Testament passages in John 8:12 and Second Corinthians 4:6. The verses appeared at the end of the scope serial numbers – “JN8:12” and “2COR4:6.”

“The biblical verse (JN8:12) must be removed utilizing a Dremel type tool and then painted black,” read instructions on how to remedy the matter.

After the letters and numbers were scrapped off, soldiers were directed to use apply black paint to ensure the verses were totally covered.

“The vendor etched those inscriptions on scopes without the Army’s approval,” Army spokesman Matthew Bourke told Fox in a written statement. “Consequently, the modified scopes did not meet the requirement under which the contract was executed.”

I don't think this is about them being anti religion or anti Bible. The military is very specific as to what markings are and are not allowed on their items almost to excess. It's all spelled out in the contract.

Depending on the product it must be marked or labeled with part number, CAGE code, lot number, date code, expiration date, warnings, blah, blah, blah... The contract also defines what type of marking (engraving, stamping, printing, etching...), font, size, color, location and so on and so forth.

Yes -- old or recurring news. No indication if they company shipped more scopes with the inscriptions or if these were in Army system and hadn't been 'modified'.

This article from Jan 2010 says: "The company pledged to remove the inscription reference on all products destined for the US military yet to be shipped and ensure all future procurements from the department of defence are produced without scripture references.

It also said it would provide 100 modification kits to forces in the field to remove the references.

"Trijicon has proudly served the US military for more than two decades, and our decision to offer to voluntarily remove these references is both prudent and appropriate," the firm, founded by a devout Christian, said in a statement released on Friday."

But what if that combination of letters/numbers/symbols is just part of their normal SN?

They shouldn't have been paid for the scopes, IMO. They weren't delivered to the army within the agreed upon specs. Don't really care about biblical reference.

First, this is just the sort of inflammatory crap news article I expect from Fox.

Second, the vendor should pay for the rework.

Third, arn't you getting tired of those Christian who do things like this to push their beliefs on others and then cry like five year olds when people say "no thank you".
