President Obama acknowledged Monday that inequality is on the rise "even though the economy is growing." That growth hasn't helped many people who lost mid-wage jobs during the recession. Half of the U.S. population is now considered poor or low-income, and income has been redistributed from the middle class to the very rich faster under Obama than under George W. Bush.

Income inequality in the U.S. is much worse than it is in other industrialized countries, where it is also an alarming problem, according to a new report from the International Labour Organization. The gap is only getting wider as the median wage continues to fall.

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2011/12/16/9500721-census-bureau-clarifies-poverty-numbers?lite

The poverty number is fairly concrete. The definition of "low income" is subjective.

http://www.census.gov/prod/2012pubs/acsbr11-01.pdf

"In 2011, about 15.9 percent of the U.S. population had income below the poverty level, an increase from 15.3 percent in 2010."

"The percentage of people in the United States with income below 125 percent of their poverty threshold increased from 20.1 percent to 20.8 percent between 2010 and 2011."

If you use 125% of the poverty level as the definition of "low income", that yields 36.7% of the county is poor or low income. If you use 200% of the poverty level as the definition of "low income", that is how you reach 50% of the population.

but serious question....
do we care?

I didn't think we gave people with less than 200% of the poverty line the right to vote?

Seriously... a bunch of guys chatting on a cigar website about which $20 cigar is their favorite to set on fire should NEVER claim to care about the plight of the unwashed. I know I've got no particular concern for them...

What makes you think I want to help the poor at all?
I just believe in honesty. Crocodile tears for the poor while engaging in a habit like ours is hypocritical.

Besides, eliminate the poor and the next lowest income bracket will be considered the "poor", and everyone will bitch that we need to help them.

I would support outlawing the term "poor". Problem solved.
