the Tragedy of S.S. St. Louis
(May 13 - June 20, 1939)

the ss st louis. Louis, a German ocean liner,
dramatically highlights the difficulties faced
by many people trying to escape Nazi terror.
In May 1939, 937 passengers, most Jewish
refugees, left Hamburg, Germany, en route to
Cuba. Most of them planned eventually to
emigrate to the United States and were on
the waiting list for admission. All passengers
held landing certificates permitting them
entry to Cuba, but when the St. Louis
reached the port of Havana, the President of
Cuba refused to honor the documents.

After the ship left the Havana harbor, it sailed
so close to the Florida coast that the
passengers could see the lights of Miami.
The captain appealed for help, but in vain.
US Coast Guard ships patrolled the waters to
make sure that no one jumped to freedom
and did not allow the ship to dock in the US
The St. Louis turned back to Europe.
Belgium, the Netherlands, England, and
France admitted the passengers. But within
months, the Germans overran western
Europe. Hundreds of passengers who
disembarked in Belgium, the Netherlands,
and France eventually fell victim to the Nazi
"Final Solution."

•The "Final Solution" was designed to
exterminate every single Jewish man,
woman and child. The only Jews who would
have conceivably survived had Hitler been
victorious were those who somehow
escaped discovery by the Nazis.

Founded in 1948, Israel is the world's only
Jewish State and is currently the Middle
East's only liberal democracy. It lies in the
area biblically referred to as the Land of
Israel.In 2013, nearly eight million people -
Jews, Muslims, Christians - call Israel home.

The Arab-Israeli War of 1948 broke out when
five Arab nations invaded territory in the
former Palestinian mandate immediately

independence of the state of Israel on May
14, 1948. In 1947, and again on May 14, 1948,
the United States had offered de facto
recognition of the Israeli Provisional
Government, but during the war, the United
States maintained an arms embargo against
all belligerents.

on to syria. i don't give a sh*t how many of
each other they kill, nor the afgans kill each
other, during he iraq war against iran, the
usa knew sadam was using poisen gas and
we said nothing.

we need to stay at home and watch football
until those countries kill each other. when
we failed those passangers on the st louis,
we lost ou credibility as the moral leader
of the world. if obama wants to act against
syria use drones and kill them the legal way
with bombs

Anyone that studies history would clearly understand why Israel is never going to let the 'other guy hit first' by any means necessary. =d> =d> =d>

It's tragic that 937 people were denied access to the US and presumedly perished at the hands of the Nazis.

But, what of the 700,000 Palestinians forced to leave their homes in the exodus of 1948. How many of those perished?

My point is this why should we pick sides? Since we as a nation have chosen to be the policeman of the world, we will never be safe even on our own soil.

Just a thought.

Look at google maps and notice all the green of Israel from agriculture, especially citrus supplying Europe. The number of desalination plants making fresh water is amazing too. Quite a marvel going from sand to productive soil

These are Middle East problems that don't involve our national security. For the most part the Middle East is a land of tribes as is most if not all of the African continent. Troubles which from the dawn of man have been fighting and/or enslaving each other.

Hussein didn't gas his countryman, he gassed Kurds who is own tribe the Sunnis hate. As I'm certain time will tell Assad did similarly. Not that it's right, but it is what it is. Most tribes in that region could give a crap less what happened to the Paletinians, but at the end of the day they are all Arabs and all was well until non-Arabs got involved.

for 500 years the jewish people lived and thrived

in germany. they were a part of the culture. one day they were reminded

that they were not jewish people, they were jews, Kristallnacht.
