I've never tried pipe tobacco, but I'd like to. No clue where to start..... I see there's quite a few different types of pipes and seemingly endless varieties of tobacco.

So my questions are: Is the style of pipe personal preference? If I like a certain type of cigar, would I be better off starting with a similar style pipe tobacco (full body cigar - full body pipe tobacco)?

As always, thanks for the advice!

I would strongly recommend a missouri meershaum corn cob. They are very forgiving and usually under 8 bucks. CVS and rite aids carry them.

As far a baccys. Look at the briar azzhats thread and see what others are smoking. Or go to ur local and ask what they recommend. I would suggest if it smells good to u then try it. Just buy an ounce of a few kinds. I prefer virginia burley blends. Ron prefers vapers. Every piper here will recommend something different.

My baccy flavor profile changed quickly compared to cigars.

I second the Missouri meerschaum, I think the country gentleman has been the easiest and one I smoke most often

For the most part, style of pipe is an aesthetic preference, but some pipes make a difference in the final taste. Some types of pipe tobacco smoke better in a tall, skinny bowl, while others do better in a short, wider bowl.

Tobaccos that smoke wet benefit when smoked in a pipe with a longer shank and stem or even better still when smoked in a clay tavern pipe.

Experiment. I really like the combo of Marlin Flake and a very tall, skinny bowl that I have for one of my Kirsten pipes. I also really like Stonehaven in my clay tavern pipe. Squadron leader and Red Rapparee both smoke very well in my Dunhill Tanshell, but not as well in any of my CAO meerschaum pipes.

I recommend buying quality tobacco that is tinned versus the bulk jar stuff, but you might prefer the mostly aromatic stuff you find in bulk.

Some people love blends with perique, but personally they all just taste peppery to me and are unsmokable, except for Samarra, which is one of my favorite blends in the world.

Try them all and see what you like.

My hubby loves corn cob pipes. I've seen people purchase a bunch of them to try different tobaccos in each so they don't 'ruin' a favorite pipe.

Missouri Meerschaum makes some very nice hardwood pipes that would last longer than a corn cob and not break the bank. If you're thinking about an aromatic tobacco, Sutliff's Molto Dolce has a wonderful room note and tastes nice too.

I personally haven't been able to get into pipe smoking, but who knows? I started very slowly with cigars and became a fiend! LOL
