Our mega computer, capable of almost anything in 1999 is giving up the ghost. Time to take it down and dispose of it. I'm aware I can't throw it out, and have to take it to a computer recycling center.

But before I do that, is there a quick and easy way to delete any and all files that might have personal informmation?

Should I just get a few refrigerator magnets and rub them all over it?

What's best?

Magnets won't do it, try a disk wipe utility.

The only sure method is smashing the disk with a hammer or shooting hole through the drive.

Take the hard drive out and destroy it. 🍺

On any computer that I have recycled, I remove the hard drive from it before taking it down there.

Once you remove the disc, and bend it in half, the only people that would be able to get it read is the NSA, and they don't care what I have on there anyway.

Okay, so I'm either following Gene or the Pliny/Kipp.

What does the hard drive look like?

Open the box, flat cables go to the floppy and the hard drive.

Other end of each cable goes to motherboard.

Floppy is smaller (fewer wires) and you can see on the box where you put the floppy in.

Other one is hard drive.

undo cable, take out screws.

Take to range and destroy, or whack it with a sledge.

No sledge, take apart with small screwdriver and pull out the discs inside, destroy each disc with a hammer.

yours is IDE desktop

Turning out to be a fun little event. My kid is working on the project right now.

The only way he can screw it up is by not ruining it.

Take the f#cker apart and take out the hard drive and discs and anything that a google "how to video" tells you to.

Electro magnet all that stuff.

Acid bath all that stuff.

Smash the **** out of all of it w\ small sledge,(wear saftey goggles).

Make a super hot fire for one hour then toss all that stuff in there , keep stoking fire.

Take ashes and disperse in four divided paper bags and dispose at four different locations....

Physically destroying the hard drive...and I mean DESTROYING IT is always the best method...that means breaking the platters into little pieces. Software solutions are only an option IF you want to save the hard drive which doesn't sound like an option with a drive that old, however, here is a free program that will do the job...
