Here's a link to a nice article about the 3rd Photo Recon Squad. That is where my father served in WWII. They mostly flew out of Saipan. He was assigned to the Valiant Lady (F13-A a B29 outfitted to do photo recon or bombing runs) as a tail gunner. They were the ones who went out after the Enola Gay to take pictures of the mushroom cloud, and after the "Fat Man" atomic bomb was dropped by Bockscar, taking damage photos of Nagasaki. Nice piece of history documented in the article.

Enjoy - let me know what you think....

Those tail gunners had it rough. Glad your Dad came back.

Thank you posting the link. Thanks to your Father for his service.

I am a fan of aviation history. The B-29 was an amazing plane for it's time and as the article mentions dangerous even without enemy action. Engine overheating was a problem not quite solved when they were deployed.

The article mentions the Bockscar, I saw that plane at the Wright-Patterson Air Museum in Ohio.

One of my Uncles, now deceased, lied about his age and joined the Marines when he was 15. He was in the landing at Saipan and told about stringing communications lines in the palm trees while firefights were going on below him. I suppose he had something to do with those B29's being able to take off from there.

Ya, need those Jar-heads to clear 'em out and get it safe for everyone else!! If he was there a while I'm sure they tipped a few together!! I have pictures of Saipan before and after we took it over, pretty much cleared it off and set up bases and runways! I'll dig some of those out and see if I can get 'em to post on the pic forum. Stay tuned.......
