Life in prison for pot? Backwards-*ss rednecks... (that's not directed at all texans... I have friends and family there...)

http://fox43.com/2014/05/16/teen-faces-life-in-prison-for-pot-brownies/

ROUND ROCK, Texas – A Texas man is facing up to life in prison for his baking habit. Joe Lavoro said, “It’s outrageous. It’s crazy. I don’t understand it.”

Lavoro says he can’t understand why his son is in so much legal trouble. Authorities say 19-year-old Jacob Lavoro is accused of making and selling pot brownies.

He is being charged with a first-degree felony. Lavoro said, “Five years to life? I’m sorry. I’m a law abiding citizen. I’m a conservative. I love my country. I’m a Vietnam veteran, but I’ll be damned. This is wrong.”

Jack Holmes, Lavoro’s attorney, said, “I was outraged. I’ve been doing this 22 years as a lawyer and I’ve got 10 years as a police officer and I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

The charge is so severe because the recipe Jacob used includes hash oil, which allows the state to use the sugar, cocoa, butter and other ingredients to determine the weight of the drugs.

Holmes said, “They’ve weighed baked goods in this case. It ought to be a misdemeanor.”

Lavoro said, “If he did something wrong, he should be punished but to the extent that makes sense. This is illogical. I’m really upset and I’m frightened. I’m frightened for my son.”

I know for a fact this was studied by leading scientists funded by a consortium of the Frito-Lay and Nabisco groups. Pot is all natural, and good for you.

Sorry but this says he's accused of making and SELLING Pot brownies. If they prove he is in fact guilty of delivery of a controlled substance he deserves exactly what he's being charged with.I really do not have a problem with personal use.I have some personal use experience back in my teenage and early twenties years but not once did I ever sell it.That was always where I drew the line.Sorry he's being charged for the entire weight of the baked goods but if you're going to be involved in illegal activity you need to know the consequences of said illegal activity and weigh the risk accordingly. Now all that being said......5 to life in Texas means he's in and out in 2-3 years and learned a valuable lesson in life.

The problem I have with the "punishment", is how this "offense" stacks up to other crimes for which one can receive 5 years to life, not just in Texas, but other states as well.

I seem to remember long sentences in Texas for possession of relatively small amounts amounts of weed, with similar length sentences handed out to violent criminals, rapists, child molesters, etc.

Gateway drug? Caffeine, alcohol and nicotine are easily just as likely to be gateway drugs as is marijuana.

Yup. Just make it legal, sell it in packs like cigarettes, and tax it.

Another casualty of the War on Drugs, an idea just as foolhardy as Prohibition.

You can talk endlessly about the evils of drugs, alcohol included, but otherwise law abiding people are going to use drugs. Take the crime out of drugs, make them legal and tax their sale. Get over your controlling self and mind your own business if you disagree.

ONLY because the dealer you buy from has a vested interest in selling you other stuff.

Legalize it, put a minimum age to purchase and tax at 100% people will buy it. I would the first day it goes on sale.

At almost 60 (3 months, yikes) how much do you think I'll smoke? Two hits a weekend is what I guess, gladly dip into cigar budget for a small bag.

Unfortunately, this kind of crazy chit goes on in a lot of places in the US. You can shoot some one dead and get a year on probation but if you get high and don't hurt anyone you can be locked up for years.
