Born Charles Buchinsky in a small coal mining town (Ehrenfeld, PA) about 10 miles north of my hometown, he was a local boxing legend even before heading to Hollywood. He was every bit as tough in real life as he was on the big screen. His father died when Charles was just 10 years old so young Charles went to work to help support his family. The 11th of 15 children, legend has it his family was so poor he had to wear his sisters dress to school because the family couldn't afford enough clothes for all 15 kids. Now that will make a boy tough, especially growing up in a coal mining town! He was married to one of Hollywood's most beautiful leading ladies, Jill Ireland.
Not bat for the son of an Eastern European immigrant coal miner from a tiny coal town tucked away in the Allegheny mountains of the Keystone State.
