So, I fly out of the Marshall Islands toward Hono. We have one stop in Majuro. As we are taxing up to stop I can see a baggage cart full of coolers. No... not cigar coolers. Fish coolers!!!

They pack these stupid things in cargo with the rest of the checked bags.

One of them came open during flight to Hono and now my checked bag smells like fish!! Fortunately, the bag protect most of the stuff in it... mostly. But my Diesel cap and another cap and a jacket now smell like fish. I washed the bag and the caps in the shower here at the hotel and that helped a little. I had to put everything in plastic trash bags.

Anyway, what a stupid, stupid policy to allow haphazardly secured coolers of fish in the same cargo hold as people's checked bags.

Oh... United. It used to be Continental and it's the only commercial airline available for that route.

There's about 30 different variables to the scenario you just described.

Bottom line, keep any reciepts for items you might replace, and submit them to United . . .

No I didn't. We arrived at about 0250 o'clock AM in the morning.... I just wanted to get to the hotel.

Got about 4 hours of sleep after trying to wash that stuff out. Then out to the airport in the afternoon for a 7.5 hour flight. Arrived at DFW this morning. Staying at a Hyatt House so I can get some sleep... then off to the folks place tomorrow. It's only about a hundred mile drive. But....😴

I am planning to contact United about that stupid policy as soon as the brain gets the rest....

I've flown back from Mexico and Panama with coolers full of fish.......Duct tape is your friend. No spillage ever thank goodness.I would feel bad if my fish ruined someone's possessions but I'd be even more pissed at the loss of fish.

Hey this reminds me........it's time for a fishing trip.

All airlines haul baggage & cargo. Placement is usually for weight & balance purposes. The spillage probably resulted from poor loading. They won't stop carrying fish because of this. Accidents happen. As soon as able, contact their corporate customer care office. They'll probably ask if you filed a damaged bag claim. Explain why you didn't. Submit any receipts for replacement costs. UA's bag policies should be found on their website explaining what you're entitled to, in some cases by law. UA's contact info should be found on their website as well. I would snail-mail, e-mail & phone call them. Keep a detailed log of any response. Good Luck.

Place the hats in your dishwasher on the top rack and run them through a cycle (unless they have leather components) - they will come out fine.

After making a claim with United, take the jacket to a dry cleaner. - send United the bill.
