If you live in Texas, or Florida, or any state with no tax. In CA it would be even less... because they'd take a cut of the whole, as well.

40 friggin' percent. Wow. And we sheeple are okay with this. Sad, ain't it?

It isn't free. You bought a ticket. Millions of other people bought tickets. The government makes money hand over fist on the lottery and then taxes the sh*t out of anyone who actually wins... and makes even more.

It's a tax on the mathematically challenged. My wife plays on occasion, and she tells me I can't win if I don't play. I told her, au contraire mon ami... if you win, so do I.

Meh. It is a huge waste of money for some folks.

I play about 3-4 times a year, random intervals not just when the jackpot is huge, for a few bucks a pop. Perhaps my share of the tax for the stupid, but lightning could strike. And frankly I would prolly spend it on booze and bad food anyway....in the end though, I don't really get uptight about the taxes on it all. The government will get their share of everything. I would be perfectly comfortable with say, a 10 million dollar jackpot that got split 60/40 my favor...

Its entertainment, I see it the same as someone buying a ticket to go to a movie. They get to relax and lose themselves in the plot for a couple hours just as someone who buys a lotto ticket gets a couple days to think about what they would do with the money if they win.

And as far as the taxes go, is it fair probably not but just like someone else mentioned if someone wanted to give me 50 million but i had to give 20 of it to the government I would still take it.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be thrilled to win. I just think Uncle Sam has his greedy little hands in way too many places.

Was in a work pool that hit a moderate jackpot once. $200,000 pre tax. Dont recall exacts, but I think it came to about $1200/dollar buy-in. So got one share for every buck in the pot. I only put in a dollar, but some had 10, $20 in the pot.

That was the first and last ticket I ever bought

Used to play years ago for $20 when jackpot got into multi-millions, but never won and don't play the lottery anymore. Used to enjoy going to Las Vegas and playing blackjack and the poker machines, but not so much anymore. Won about as often as I lost. It's been several years now, but after losing four or five trips in a row, I found other things to do with my spare money: cigars.

An added benefit to satisfy my gambling fix is the number of games and contests available here. Thank you, CBid.

I have a fiend who is a PhD in mathematics and computer science and he's a professor at a good college...

He says that your chances of winning the lottery are the same if you play.. or if you don't play.

I said.. Well, people do win!

He said.. Yeah, but it won't be you.

D'oh...
