#4 Bzzzzt! Where is the engineering study to support that? Also, you obviously never attended a game in the Kingdome, perhaps the most notorious echo chamber to ever hold sporting events. The Kingdome, by virtue of all of its acres and acres of concrete, magnified sound so badly that it was rare that a band could hold a concert there and not get hammered back with their own noise.
Conversely, CenturyLink Field is about as open a design as I can imagine. They couldn't dig down deeply, as downtown Seattle is mainly built on land filled in and very near sea level in places. Only one end zone has a serious number of seats, and that is shaped like half a football, hardly the kind of target you'd need to produce an echo.
If you're going to make up cr@p to fling from the vicinity of the monkey house, please at least have the facts and historical reference to back it. Otherwise, you look and sound like someone from whom all of the noise is emanating from the opposite-end hole from which most folks talk.[frypan]
#7 Not until recently would I have agreed with you, and I was born about 2 miles away from where CenturyLink Field is. Have lived most of my life within 25-30 miles of Seattle, been rooting for them since they started. I can tell you personally, having attended games in the Kingdome, and also having been on field to play half time (our high school band won tons of trophies, so we got some nice gigs like Seahawks games). Seahawk fans have been loud for a really, really, really (relative to their start date) long time.
This year folks have gone especially nuts. Local news 1 hr broadcast goes something like this: 25 minutes of commercials, 30 minutes of stories related--usually in the most remote or banal possible way--and sprinkled in there, about 5 minutes of actual news. I can't freaking watch it. It seems like it has been far worse this year, which is odd, since last year was only their 2d trip, and the only successful one. Part of it, I think, is that there is a sense of something special with this team. Part is a lot of people messing their britches, quite frankly.
But most of it, I believe, is born of years and years and years of lousy teams in pro sports. Think about it, for men's major pro sport leagues, there's the 78-79 (I think) Sonics championship, and before that, you'd have to go back to pre-my birth (I'm 51) to the Seattle Metropolitans in the NHL and about 1950, IIRC. Soccer is huge here, but it's still a niche sport in America. After years of terrible drafts, we land Kevin Durrant, and 2 years later, he's playing in OKC. No NBA, No NHL, the Seahawks have only been consistently good in recent years since Russell Wilson's mid-first year. The Mariners have never been to a World Series unless they bought tickets to watch someone else play. Not even the year they won 116 games.
Seattle sports fans haven't just been starving. We've been in a sports desert. We finally get a taste of the sweet life. As a result, we get (I'm not kidding) something like 4 news stories a day where someone has painted their home/roof/lawn in a Seahawks theme, and even a story where one homeless dude opines that it's bringing the homeless together. Seriously. Food? Nope. Shelter? Nope? Clothing? Barely. NFL team doing well? CHECK!
Hey...weed wasn't legally available without an Rx last year. Hmmm...maybe we just have more fans that are stoned. Seriously...when was the last time you got baked and did not have to worry about the cops, and could still be quiet? Yeah, me either.
Some day, we will recover our wits and return to being the quiet corner of the country, where HELLO, POT IS LEGAL. Until then, please pardon our interruption. I'll be OK once this righteous Sativa (Amnesia) sets in.
