A kid that lives next door to my parents wrote a letter to Michelle Obama about the nasty school lunches they now eat. Surprisingly, he received a letter back from Michelle Obama explaining why there were changes. A local news organization wrote up on this kids experience. It's a fun quick read. Kudos to the kid. The link to the article is below.

I aplaude his initiative.

Of course it his right to become a wide body and eat whatever he wants to eat as that is what we should let our children do (i.e. whatever they want to do). [sarcasm]

Too many fat people probably caused that Delta Airlines flight to skid off the runway.

I really don't think having a slightly better tasting lunch is what's causing obesity with kids. It's that they are not active like kids in the past. As a kid I went outside to play with my friends till the street lights came on. We all had pretty decent tasting school lunches growing up and the vast majority of us were not over weight. Kids nowadays stay inside and play on their handheld devices, computers and gaming systems. It's almost like parents have to bribe their kids to go outside. It's not the food, its the lack of an active lifestyle making these kids fat.

No doubt it will be both if the kids are not active, but I guarantee the lack of an active lifestyle plays a bigger role. Plus kids usually only eat one meal at school, in the middle of the day, with loads of time after lunch in order to burn off those calories. These kids need to learn to move more.

You don't understand much do you?

Let me get this straight. Someone was interested in raising the nutritional standard of what the schools are feeding your children (hey, look, right off the bat someone other than you was deciding what your children eat). You'r upset because this woman wanted to ensure that these various groups which were ALREADY deciding what your children ate, met specific nutritional standards.

Then, to go further, she has no power. A completely different person introduced a bill. And the entire senate and house voted on said bill. It passed. But you still look at it as that evil woman telling you what your children should eat.

If you're that concerned, pack your damn kids a lard and twinkie sandwich and send them on their way. No one is telling you what your children can eat. They're telling the schools what minimum nutritional requirements have to be provided in a lunch they sell. No one told you to buy it.

But they take away home packed lunches from kids that don't meet the standards.

No Michelle Obama's taco references yet either. We're dying as a group here.

Probably. But you cant legislate parenting. They can legislate school, but adding physical activity just takes away from learning time.

The Obama lunch initiative is fucked up and disingenuous. They force kids to take (and pay for) things they don't eat then call it a success and show the increased numbers of this and that eaten when it is really thrown away.

That said I went all small government and send lunch with our daughter because no one is forcing us to get school lunches.

Because as much as I dislike Michele's program I'll never let her decide what my child can and can't eat. I'm surprised done if you allow that.

No doubt raising the nutritional value/standards of the food our kids eat (I don't have kids) is a good thing, but at least make the options taste better for these kids. My wife is a teacher and she brought me home some pizza from the school because I requested it (I wanted a little nostalgia), but that pizza tasted like I was eating cardboard with ketchup. It definitely did not look or taste like the pizza when I was a kid. If you're going to give kids healthier food, at least make it taste better so they can appreciate the healthier food, so they can continue healthier eating habits in the future. It seems the quality of food has gone down for these kids to compensate for the higher prices of healthier foods that they have to serve.
