Hi All. I am new to cigars. Well, kind of. I have been smoking cigars for about 4 months. I guess that's pretty new. I just bought my first humidor on here. And it's seasoned and ready to go. I have tried several cigars but it seems to be a slow process. I want to try as many as I can. I enjoy tobacco enough to realize a difference in quality. I smoked cigarettes for years. So I have no interest in cheap nasty cigars. I like the quality cigars that are well made with good tobacco. What I am wondering is, what is a good way to build a collection and fill my humidor without going to the B & M and spending $8 to $20 on every stick? That's not a very good way to try a lot of different brands and leaf types. I have bought several on here but still, everyone pretty much knows the value of the product. Have I found myself an expensive hobby? If I did, I did. I love it. I just was curious on how some of you might have built up a large inventory.

It is not a cheap hobby, by any means. Buying packs of five is a good start.

Go out to the discussion section and read through the "noobs read this" or whatever it is called. It gives some great advice. There are some good search options given on there.

Never ever lose a bid.
That's the way you build up an impressive collection.
Soon, when people see you bidding on something, they'll know to not even bother bidding, because you will outbid them.
After a few overbids, you will be feared to the point that no one will bid against you, and you'll be able to get great deals, furthering your expanding, and impressive collection of cigars.
Now go out and buy a few coolers.............

I agree with stinger, read the noob thread. Buying five packs is a good way to start building up your stash. I would suggest trying to get some fivers that you can use as trade bait. You will likely end up with a lot of the same stuff. Then you can do some trades in the thread titled "Noob Pib" so that you have more variety. Keep smoking and pay attention to what you like.

It is not a cheap hobby imo. Unfortunately I always find that the best value per cigar comes with buying a box and being a noob it is hard to invest in a box when starting out because it makes it tougher to try more different labels. Try samplers for now until you find what you like then open up the wallet for box purchases.

Enroll in the DP Newell School of Cigar Buying and you will save a lot. Don't listen to King Kove.....he will lead you astray. Bid often and lose 95% of your bids and you will do OK here.

It's very expensive to get a stash built up if you smoke a lot. I started slow with lots of fivers and then the FOGS here started hammering me with the good stuff and it got even more expensive. I'm not a 3-5 sticks a day smoker, so eventually my stash built to 5 desktops, then I got a tower. Now, I keep 2-3 thousands smokes on hand, but they age and get better with time(mostly) and I only buy 3-5 boxes a year to keep the rotation going. Eventually you will know what you like and things will get easier, enjoy the ride man, there are some great people here and this this the best forum on the net imo.

Life is too short to smoke cheap cigars.

Buying 5'ers is a good way to build some inventory. Some of the noob trades will allow you to get a variety of different things to try;

I chose quality over quantity myself and therefore only a couple of cigars a week. Since I don't smoke a ton, I find I don't need to keep a ton of inventory on hand. I have 1 cooler which typically has 200-300 cigars, and I find that is plenty(with the possible exception of football season where I need some stash just for gambling)

Of course, I find I like to hang out at my local B&M, and as a result I'll go in there and by a couple at a time as a reason to hang out, which always gives me a huge selection.
